Wow. That really sucks. Like, actually sucks. I don't know how long I could last without easy Internet access...

That sucks. I can't see how Comcast can justify so large a fine, even if they can prove it was from your housing group(though I assume they can).

They might be trying to cover the cost of some lawsuit levelled against them by the people whose movies were pirated.

Weren't we just talking a few weeks ago about people not wearing their shoes in public spaces?

One of my coworkers, one of the few I actively disilke, is doing this now. >< Why am I not surprised, out of them all, that it's him.

I never had to deal with parents trying to live vicariously through me.

But take solace in one thing I've learned in life:

One day, you'll be free. Free to succeed or fail to the exact degree you're comfortable with. It may be cold comfort now, but just remember that it doesn't go on forever. Your parents do not get to dictate your time and drain your emotional energy forever. The trick is to come out on the other side of being raised by your parents with your sanity and your sense of fun and pleasure intact. Count the days, if that's what it takes, until you can be your own person.

Regarding one point of that. My daughter could turn on the PS3, start up netflix, choose her account, and pick her show of choice when she was 4.

After the last class, I asked my friend if there was homework (I forgot to grab the weekly sheet that says what is due when). He says no, and I have no reason to think he's wrong, because he grabbed one of the sheets and is usually much more on top of things than me. Today it turns out there was homework. Two nights worth of homework at one!

Caroline, perhaps you should put her in her place?

Set some boundaries.

Show her how to use Netflix and refuse to do it again for her since she knows it.

Tell her to back off.

Record her nonsense and play it back to her.

Call the cops if she tries to hit you.

Record it all.

Evidence.

Pretty much this. From what I've seen so far, it seems like his father enjoys spouting dribble about how Caroline should not hurt her mother by attempting to have free will, but he still isn't afraid to physically and verbally abuse all the women in his family.

By the way, Caroline, did you say something about that? Next time it happens, you might be able to harmlessly learn more about the situation by asking why your father was such a dick to a woman (her), or whatever else might have happened by then. It would probably seem pretty harmless, even to someone as idiotic as them, as long as she doesn't explode in a fit of rage for having been wrong.

I don't know your parents, though, so I can't say for sure wether that would work as intended.

She mentioned once that she lives in a place where the police basically do jackshit, so I doubt that would work.

Unfortunately, I don't think her country is very accommodating to children.

Yeah, evidently Honduras(?) is not big on child protective services. At least not in Caroline's region.

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Someday, someone needs to go around with a pickaxe and kneecap all the abusive parents on the planet whilst reciting what the parents did wrong.
