Prologue

  It was only last week when I was still sitting in a proper room, guzzling my favorite brand of dwarven ale, and resting my feet in front of a nice warm fire, and now here I am, stuck in the snow with my hands wracked with frostbite and feet numbed with cold. The king has given me the order to immigrate to some random fortress located in the tundras, which of course I would’ve gladly refused to do so if it wasn’t for his iron will and persistence. Luckily however, he also gave me the authority to take the position of leader, so I guess at least that’s nice.

  Either way, I’m currently stuck in a snowstorm in our makeshift tent that holds the rest of the migrants. Two of us are sick, and another one wimped out before going insane and getting himself encased in snow out there. Our food supply was running low, seeing how there was nothing to eat in this barren land, and we were down to the last few sips of beer. I’ve already sent the scouts out, but they haven’t come back yet. I suppose they must’ve gotten lost and froze to death or something...

  I told my men to continue marching. Most of us were tired, but snow was piling up on our tent, and would bury us if we stayed any longer. After awhile we saw a tower up ahead, which raised our spirits, but the closer we advanced, the more haphazard the road appeared.

  Clothes and armor were strewn across the field. Heavy footprints appeared in irregular places. The snow appeared to be stained with a mixture of purple and red, and what looked like the mutilated body of another dwarf was lying casually in a nearby mound. Understanding how fast the snow buries stuff in, I knew that whatever event occurred must’ve happened not too long ago. I urged my men to ignore these signs and keep moving, but I could see that some of them felt uneasy about going any further. Luckily, the ground was fairly even, and it wasn’t too long before we got to the tower.

  While we were relieved to have finally reached the landmark, a closer look showed that the tower appeared to be composed out of… coffins? Surely the previous rulers of this fort should’ve had a better taste than to make a tower out of burial objects, right?

Ignoring the coffins, I knocked on the door and a small hairy head poked out.
“Ye largely bunch must not be ze new migrants are ye not?” said the dwarf.
“Yes, and we would like to receive some hospitality after our long treks.”
“Well c’mon in, we got a couple o beds ta spare.”

At least we have a place to rest for now. Hopefully I will be able to somehow manage this fort. May Armok bless me and what is to become of our futures.

First month

1st Granite, 1054
   
While I am glad to have finally found the fort, my hopes of actually running the place grow weaker the further I descend. From the very entrance I could see the severed remains of various creatures lingering about. The corpses of two mutilated dwarves were lying in the dining room in a bloody mess, and a miasmic smell of decomposing bodies lingered in the air as dwarves scuttled to and thro greedily taking the items of their fallen comrades.

The “extra beds” mentioned earlier were nothing more than public hospital beds. I asked a couple of nearby dwarves if there was anywhere more private to rest, but they just stared at me and shook their heads. It didn’t take long before I learned that they don’t even have their own bedrooms yet.

Despite the ragged and gloomy nature of the fort, there was however, one room which held a different atmosphere. Upon descending about 10 or so floors, I heard laughter from afar. Up ahead was a room called the temple, and from the looks of it, it they were holding a party there. The temple was a smoothed out room decorated with high quality statues and various engravings on every wall. Four ornamental pillars held up the roof which hung three floors high. A dwarf greeted me and treated me to some beer and began telling me their brief but eventful history. I listened carefully with intent as he told me of the discovery of the cavern, their meetings with the troglodytes, the assault of the titan, and the recent goblin ambush which forced them to shed that blood. Yet even with all these hardships, they were still alive and well.

Perhaps there is still hope for the fortress to survive. Perhaps there might even be a way to prosper. Either way, hopefully things will turn out well now that I’m in charge.

2nd Granite, 1054
   After touring through the fortress, I noticed that there was an unusual lack of traps and defenses considering the maturity of the fort. The only thing that could even be remotely considered a defense was a simple pair of floodgates blocking off the outside world. Immediately, I order the construction of a wall to surround the fort so that we could at least have some outdoor breathing space should we encounter a siege.
   But of course I was not satisfied with just a mere wall.   Flipping to page 256 in my book of Gruesome Fortification Traps for the Hard Hearted, I notice a specific design which just happens to utilize the cold polar climate against our enemies. I told the miners to open up the aquifer which a previous ruler ordered to seal up. The miners looked at me as if I was a maniacal builder struck with a fey mood, but I assured them that all was perfectly safe. Hesitantly, but obediently, they began to dig out a channel which would later house my contraption of frozen death.

28 Granite, 1054
   During these few cold weeks, much has been done. The wall has been completed, and several surface traps were dug out and set. My contraption is nearly complete, but it still required a power source. I wonder if I should power it with water or wind?

First season

4th Felsite
About 20 migrants come in. They seem pretty well off despite being covered in snow. Most of them were threshers and craftdwarves, so I assigned them to become masons, miners, and anything else which I considered useful. Guess we gonna need more farms and beer as well.

15th Felsite
Elven caravan arrived, right when my damn broker decided to take a nap. Guy woke up soon enough though, so I guess it’s alright. I took every log and piece of wood they had in exchange for my rock ones, in addition to a few donations, because we’ll need these guys to keep up our wood supplies.

2nd Hematite
Things are starting to get kinda quiet around here. I decide that this would be a nice time to begin the construction of a second giant tower right by the first. Problems however, arise the moment I began. A dwarf misplaces a wall section and causes a cave in. He dies immediately. Several other dwarves somehow trap themselves inside their own construction and I am forced to tear down the walls and redo everything again.
Apparently I was never born an architect…

12th Hematite
Group of kobolds come in and start taking stuff. The Elven traders just watch and laugh as they run by. Some of my war dogs chase them around, but those sneaky little bastards must’ve grown wings on their legs, seeing how none of us could catch them. Maybe I should set up some cage traps as well.

Summer

4th Malachite
I decide that today would be a good day to test out my freeze chamber. A dwarf lowered the safety walls, and once everyone was out of the way, the lever was pressed. A moment passed, and in an instant, water burst through the walls, which solidified into ice upon contact with the outside air. The trap was successful!

I ordered the mechanics to reset the device, but for some reason the gears were stuck. It was only then that I realized that the entire row of mechanisms was frozen solid. In the end, I had to shut down the entire device before painstakingly removing each gear device and replacing it with a new one.



It was about this time when I started pondering about how to further harness the power of the underground magma pools. Recalling my old academy notes, I found a page which described how to pump magma up multiple Z-levels.

7th Malachite
Out of nowhere, one of my cheese makers dies and a miner who was tunneling to reach a magma pool decides to take a bath in the hot gooey stuff.


An engraver throws a tantrum and punches another dwarf in the face, but calms down afterwards. I cancel the magma pumping project and instead focus on a new one which I’m pretty sure should raise general happiness. I have decided to carve out personal rooms for each and every dwarf.


This decision of course, would strain our wood supplies, but I felt it was necessary if I didn’t want any more tantrum outbreaks.

22nd Galena
Human caravan arrives.
Not a single wood log in their stocks…
Oh well, still gave them a couple of random trinkets in exchange for a few packages of meat.

23rd limestone
It seems that my freeze chamber “ahem” apparently isn’t quite working. The gears keep on freezing and getting stuck, so for now I will just quietly cancel any further work on it and continue on other projects.
24th limestone
Uh oh… while mining out the disposal area, I made a calculation error, and it umm… collapsed… along with a rather… important dwarf getting caught in the fray.







Luckily Arni was not fatally injured and I promise I will give him the best medical care and attention we have, so peace ^^.

Autumn to Winter

18th Timber
Curse them! An ambush!


A small group of goblins appear just outside of our fort. Luckily the newly erected walls keep them all out. Some of them step in the cave-in trap I erected earlier, but for some reason nothing happens. I might have to re-inspect them personally once our green skinned guests leave us alone

12th Moonstone
It appears that the goblins secretly hired a professional pick locker to bust open our doors, because one second I was downstairs managing our goods workshops, and the next I get a message from one of the dwarves that goblins have snuck an ambush in our courtyard. The dwarven caravan also decides that now would be a good time to leave the fort, so right when the goblins came in, they met the hard cold blades of the caravan swordsdwarves. Both sides suffered losses, but the goblins were no match for my steel clad allies, so in the end, there was nothing more than a pile of slaughtered goblin remains lying in our front yard.
   Thanking the merchants, I proceed to clean up whatever was left of the remains and dump them away so as to not cause bad thoughts for the other civilians.

25th Moonstone
   Right when I thought I could take a break from this ruling business, a forgotten beast shows up in the underground fishing regions.


While it doesn’t injure anyone, it’s certainly annoying the hell out of our fisherdwarves. No one in the army is able to swim which leaves us unable to to anything to shoo away our uninvited guest… or is there?

5th Opal


   Success! My plan to collapse the cave above the beast has gone perfectly… well almost, I mean after all, sacrifices are always needed right? Anyways the beast should be crushed by now under all of that rubble. Hopefully this will enable our fishing economy to resume once again.


I wonder if its really dead?
At least it’s stopped moving for now.

1st Opal
This is my last month before my reign of authority ends. Looking back, I see both great and terrible things in my career. While I have completed several projects of mine as well as set up a nice defense for our fort, much of what I’ve done came at the cost of dwarven lives. Perhaps it is for the best that I should retire and give the ruling hand to someone more capable than I.
Guess its time to enjoy my pineapple relic now!

And I am finished. May the next ruler patch up whatever pieces are left of the now crumbling fortress.

To make the freeze chamber work...

If you look at the z level above the freeze chamber, you'll see multiple gear assemblies. Just simply place a windmill for each gear assembly on the z-level above to power the device.
The lever to open the floodgates holding back the water is in a room to the right of the chamber. It is the second to the top lever on the left side of the room.

I cannot guarantee that it will work though, so use at your own risk

Hey, that's some major words. I wouldn't aspire to get to that level - after all, we only have 10 years
