Loam Monster?
« on: June 27, 2010, 12:15:14 am »

My stonecrafter made a figurine of a loam monster. What the heck is a loam monster? I can't find mention of it anywhere on the forums or wiki.

I always imagine dwarves to train as if fighting pretend monsters. "It's a carp, use your sword!" "Shwish! Shwoosh! It's dead!" "Oh no, it's a giant cave spider! Noo, it's got me! Kill it with your axe!" "Swoosh, I cut off its head!"

Or yeah, could be a random monster.

The randomly generated demons are treated in many ways by the game as normal creature types, so they show up in stockpiles (e.g. "ass fiend leather") and in art.

I'd say Loam Monster is just another thing you could call a Dwarf. Dwarves dig into the soil and due horrific things to everything that opposes them. Seems appropriate.

If you wanted a more specific explanation, loam is a soil type, and the monster is made of it. Same as you would get an amethyst monster or a marble monster, I guess.

The random monsters must give a lot of leeway to unskilled stonecrafters. "Its a... mud titan! With three legs and a tusk!"

Urist: What the Haychevis is this supposed to be?
Urist: Oh, nice eye, sir. It's a finely crafted loam monster figurine.
Urist: It looks like somebody jammed some sticks into a bag of potting soil.
Urist: Sticks of the highest quality only and it's actually imported loam, not mere potting soil.
Urist: What? Look, there's the company name right on the back. "Gorilla of Roses Potting Soil Firm, est. 2 AoM."
Urist: It's mint condition.
Urist: ...
Urist: Limited edition.
Urist: ...
Urist: Look, do you want it or not?
Urist: ... yes.
