I found a most amazing embark
« on: June 23, 2010, 07:09:04 pm »

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
  • Flat Terrain
  • Adjacent brook and volcano (the volcano is flat as well)
  • Sediment, Flux and granite
  • Mussels for shells

Admittedly it has no sand, but if you use a 4x4 embark and get in the right place you get an upright spoiler.  For me the big draw is a volcano and a water source right next to each other, on flat terrain.  Yes you don't need a volcano, but it saves a lot of time- and FPS-eating labor.

A similar embark that works for 31.16 can be found later in the thread here

It is really, really easy to flood this place with magma fwiw.

Doors stop fire, right?

Well I tried this out and it's certainly a unique spot. I think I'll build something here.

And an upright spoiler? Eh?

Nice setup. Ideas for this location?

BTW, you can buy sand in the latest version, right? Then glassmaking shouldn't be too much of an issue.

Indeed, you can.

Ideas, anyone?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I got a cavern collapse on embark, and a ton of smoke/magma mist/whatever. There's a hill on the left, only 2z of usable rock. The hill to the right is tall but narrow. The shrubland extends out to the north, and doesn't have too many trees.

A city made of obsidian. It may require either a ton of obsidian blocks, or one hell of a casting.

Found this one using the same WorldGen info, but with Ironhand .40.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Flux, Obsidian, Sand. No sedimentary unfortunately, but with magma, who needs coal! :)

34 levels from Dwarves to top of mountain (upwards). (Volcano extends a bit more than that).
34 levels from Dwarves to river (downwards).
86 levels underground.

Oh, and the mountain is pretty much a sheer drop.

Flux is worthless without sedimentary. Iron ores only occur in sedimentary.

Yes. Clearly a bug that ought to be fixed in the future, but exploit it in the meantime.

Uh, no they don't. Hematite also occurs in Igneous Extrusive Layers, and I have tons of it ;p Plenty of gold, copper and some platinum too so far.

Maybe for a couple windows. I played a sandless fort buying out all the sand from humans, elves, and dwarves for 12 years and only got a few hundred units.

So if you want to make something out of sand, be REALLY nice to elves, because they bring by far the most.

Alternatively, use Goblinite. ;) It's the only iron ore I've ever needed.
