Any tips for terrifying?
« on: November 09, 2011, 09:31:10 pm »

I have yet to ever use military dwarves, but I was bored with my easy peaceful maps. So I have decided to try a terrifying map. I started up with 2 dwarves as axe/marksmen, 3 miner/masons, 1woodcutter/carpenter, and 1 farmer/brewer. I am in a mountain with plenty of trees, and the nearby surface valley is so deep that there is minerals and gems exposed to the sunlight! The only critters I see are yaks, nothing else.

Whats tips and suggestions do you have for me? What is the first things I should do and what do I need to really watch out for?

Dig down, and put a stone hatch on the entrance.

Do not trust skeletal or zombie animals. They will kill you.

If your area has harpies, start preparing a squad of archers.  They are as annoying as vultures, but are actually dangerous.

How do you have 'plenty of trees' but no soil?

I am trying to make chickens lay bees as eggs. So far it only produces a single "Tame Small Creature" when a hen lays bees.
Honestly at the time, I didn't see what could go wrong with crowding 80 military Dwarves into a small room with a necromancer for the purpose of making bacon.

I've never really noticed too much of a difference, but maybe I've just had good luck with terrifying biomes. Werewolves are pretty annoying, but really arent a threat unless they catch one of your dwarves one on one. They seem to come with the colder seasons, too. But maybe that's just chance again.

That incident was really what clued me in to the depth this game can offer, though that one time I made a fort of 150 dwarves suspended over a gorge and cut it all loose was pretty fun too.

The ground is so filled with rot and death that the trees grow directly on the corpses.

The layer immediately under the trees is nothing but sand, limestone, bauxite, hematite, gypsum, b. coal, jet, sandstone, lignite, and a ton of tiny piles of random gems. Not one lick of soil or water to be seen.
