The new Matrix tileset
« on: June 25, 2010, 08:05:56 pm »

Can you see beyond the code?
Do you dream in ASCII?
Are your friends and family baffled by the algebra vomit on your screen?
See how deep the rabbit hole goes with the new Matrix tileset for Dwarf Fortress!

Barely comprehensible, needlessly complicated, dwarfy, and awesome, the new Matrix tileset gives the finger to fancy, airbrushed, modern graphics. Download it today!

Some info:
- Drawn by me, Taran. Not "Tarn," Taran.
- I made this tileset for 40d; I'm not sure how compatible it is with .31.
- The tileset is 10 by 12. I can make a 16 by 16 version if there's enough demand for it.
- This tileset IS playable in theory; it's not just a random mess of glyphs. The symbols I chose do make at least a bit of sense for what they represent. Sort of.

This is hilarious and awesome. I would never, ever use it for serious purposes but I think I'll doddle around with it for a while for kicks.

Some more screenshots for you guys:

I don't know how to package the whole thing, so I'm not gonna do that (sorry!) However, I can give you the full init file so that someone else can do it, if they are so inclined:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I might tweak the colors in future versions of this thing, they're not quite perfect just yet.

All you need to do is upload the files you changed/added to create the tile set, in their respective folders in an .rar archive

So for the init file, make a folder called data, then a folder in there called init, then put your init file in that folder. Etc for any other changes.

Rar all the changes together, then upload them to the DFFD and we unrar them into our DF folders.

Ha, thats pretty cool.  I like your advertising: "the new Matrix tileset gives the finger to fancy, airbrushed, modern graphics".

I wonder if there are any roguelikes that use Asian characters instead of ASCII.  Maybe UTF-8 is enough for all future roguelikes ;p

I like the concept.  I imagine it looks even better when in play, as some parts would be blinking.

Looks awesome, but it doesn't fit DF. Would be better in some gritty sci-fi game, like a rouglike based upon EotFS.

Someone needs to edit matrix movie so that all monitors with floaty-strings show DF played with this tileset.

I think the best part is the fact that to the dwarfs their world is real, but in reality, it is an illusion, and we craft their ultimate fate.
So, the whole matrix thing goes over pretty well.

A square tileset might work better, since Japanese characters (which most of those are) are pretty much square to begin with.

And what's with the reversed/flipped/mirrored Latin letters anyway? I don't remember that in the Matrix.

Overall, this is pretty funny, but the typography/linework could use a bit of correction.

This is pretty awesome:D

The Matrix such a brilliant movie. Even after 11 years it looks good. Too bad they never made any sequels.
