AI War - Fleet Command Play Along
« on: June 28, 2010, 05:10:01 pm »

You are the last remnant of free humanity in the galaxy. The AI servants who once assisted you in warfare have broken away, and now dominate the stars.

Will you survive the onslaught? Will you drive the AI menace from your galaxy? Will you lead humanity to freedom?

Let's find out.

- Setup -

So I am not all that good at the game myself, but would like to try out a community-led playthrough. You guys will have full control, and we will advance at your pace, unless something comes up in-game that must be dealt with. It is also my hope that I will learn a little along the way and be better at the game. I've never done something like this, so it should be Fun.

First thing's first, we need to set the game up. I would like to keep the first game simple, so we'll be using the 'simple' map style and ships.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

So first we need to pick our homeworld. This impacts what 'extra' ship we get. Pictured here are:

Caginvu - Laser Gatling - "Fires low-power lasers at a high rate. Best in large groups."
Zuphas - Anti Armor - "Excellent for attacking enemy armor and other targets at range."
Sochrtic - Armor Ship - "Weak firepower but heavily armored. Excellent against turrets."
Bamaskil - Space Tank - "Very heavily shielded with low speed and range, but a strong attack. Excellent against heavily defended targets in the same manner as bombers."
Michor - MLRS - "Multiple Launcher Rocket System fires multiple mid-power rockets."
Orisimel - Raptor - "Large, blazing-fast cloaked fighter good against inftastructure and many smaller ships."
Mikau - Electric Shuttle - "Slow moving, but emits lightning into ALL nearby enemy ships. Stronger than their stats look in midsize-to-large groups."
Misabi - Raider - "Fast ship able to bypass many standard defenses such as mines and tractor beams."

Then we'll choose our opponents. You always fight two AI in this game, which follow their own rules. For this first game I was thinking it would be best to leave it on the default setting of two level 5 'random easier' AI. The 'random easier' part choses their tactics at random from the list of simpler tactical choices.

If you're curious, the easy tactics are:

Code: [Select]
Al - Entrenched Homeworld
Al - Fortress Baron
Al - Grav Driller
Al - Mine Enthusiast
Al - One-Way Doormaster
Al - Shield Ninny
Al - Sledge Hammer
Al - The Tank
Al - Train Master
Al - Turtle
Al - Zenith Descendant

So there it is. What do you think? Did I do it right? :P

Our position in the galaxy.

Connected to our homeworld are Bamaskil (NE), Michor (E), and Haslikdu (W).

Let's expand to Michor and then build some infrastructure.

I scouted Michor in preparation but it turns out it is a level 4 world with a fortress and a lot of Mark 5 and Mark 4 ships.

This means I would get my ass kicked, most likely.

Try anyway, for justice?

Do not try and take on a IV world this early. You will die.

Go for Bamaskill. It doesn't have a force field so should be easy.

Yes, you should always apply more magma.

While I was building the fleet for the attack on Bamaskill, a few AI ships came in. I dispatched them quickly, and watched while an astro train moved from Haslikdu to Michor.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The fleet is ready now. I spread the energy we have from the level 2 reactor evenly over the available designs, so we ended up with 85 bombers, 86 fighters, 85 missile frigates and 82 raptors.

Commencing attack on Bamaskil.

Bamaskil has been taken.

I fought off two waves mid-battle on our homeworld, but the fleet won through and we now own a second star. I have already built out some infrastructure at Bamaskil. I also fortified the warp point to the level 4 world from our homeworld, as both waves came from there. We have more energy, more metal/crystal income, and more ships now.

We also took control of a starship fabrication unit when we took Bambaskil.

New overview:

As you can see, scouting has revealed a second level 4 world and one with quite a few ships on it. Intel follows...

Neither of these new worlds are terribly attractive prospects.

What do you think we should do?

Hit them real hard on a fortified point. They won't expect it! :D

Linvo has the metal to go with Bamaskil's crystal, and leads into that three-star chunk with only two access points- fairly defensible, plus it points you toward that chokepoint for this entire huge section of the galaxy.  I say build up and take it.

(I now want to try this game.  Steam is pissing me off offering up all these cheap neat games when I don't have much time any more  ;))

Sorry Glacis, but I think toaster's plan has a better chance of success. :P

Massing for an attack on Linvo!

What's the range on the metal/crystal ratings?  I assume 1 is pretty bad, but how good is 4?
