Because we just need them in a game about dwarves which always needs more dwarfy moments.

Other than sometimes getting into water before determining whether or not they have the swimming stamina to reach the other side, how are lemmings dorfy?

DON'T SAY THEY HAVE BEARDS. ;_;
Yeah, they're not really dwarfy, other than the fact that they probably like to get jiggy with the alcohol and dig tunnels miles deep underground with metropolis-like kings and queens.

How about the fact that the Lemmings games seem almost like puzzle Dwarf Fortress games where you give your lemmings jobs so they don't self-destruct under the weight of their own stupidity, or make them self destruct...

An awful lot like dwarf fortress :P , Heck the Lemmings and DF Dwarves are probably blood related.

Well this won't happen any time soon now, not since the animal sponsorship drive ended.

Well, you could always mod Lemming in.
Give them fast speed and high innate dodge skill.
Dodge skills, when used near water, can easily make them "dodge" into water.

One of the toads decided to go for a swim in the moat - presumably because he could path through the moat to my dwarves. He is not charging in, just loitering in the moat.

The toad is having a nice relaxing swim.
The goblin mounted on his back, however, is drowning.

The thing about lemmings suiciding is a disney myth. No animal can(other than humans which are idiots) suicide.

April 2013 -> May 2013.

That's barely necro on a regular forum. On this forum, the thread might as well be considered still active.  ;)

Actually they can be driven to suicide. Mammoths and Bison were hunted by driving them off of cliffs and Wildebeest and similar animals have been known to occasionally do it largely on their own if startled. It depends on the leaders intelligence, just like video game Lemmings. ;D

Marine mammals may be capable of suicide, Flipper's trainer stated that she drowned herself in his arms due to the stress of captivity, thoguh that may just have been a story to gather sympathy for his cause, but also some cases of Dolphin and whale beaching have been thought to be self inflicted rather than accidental.

They're nearly as bad as badgers. Build a couple of anti-buzzard SAM sites marksdwarf towers and your fortress will look like Baghdad in 2003 from all the aerial bolt spam. You waste a lot of ammo and everything is covered in unslightly exploded buzzard bits and broken bolts.

There's also elephants that could get trauma's and the like.

Actually, quite a few beasts engage in selfdamaging behaviour when under (severe) stress.

the lemming myth comes from their mass migration behaviour, which often pushes those on the outsides away from the main pack, and off of the cliffs that they travel on, they do not jump straight off cliffs, however it is true that many animals have been shown to have emotional scarring from traumatic experiences which has resulted in suicede, notably, many marine mammals will beach themselves when they get old, out of pack instinct, them being slow weakens the herd, and they cant survive on their own, so some do commit suicide
