Make Skull Totem's More Awesome?

When you examine them, they should be inscribed with some details of how the creature died!

It is a most excellent way to display the heads of your fallen enemies!

Totems can already be decorated AFAIK...

Maybe make it so they can be used to decorate items, like gems are used now. Have my monarchs throne decorated with some elf skull totems.

No, no. Skull totem's shouldn't be decorations, they should be buildings; they make more violent dwarves happy, but piss off traders or other races who see them.

What do you really need to turn Elves into Dwarves? Mutation could make them grow a beard; insanity effects could make them evil-minded, aggressive, tree-hating cave dwellers, and instant, full necrosis of their lower legs could make them short.

I dunno why human or dwarf traders should be outraged at totems that aren't of their own kind... but definitely you should be able to put totems on posts or something.

WormSlayer, what is that tileset? I did look but nothing seemed to match.

I'd imagine that the effects of a totem would depend on several factors:

1) Members of the same race would be rather offended.
2) (Willing) members of the same civilization and allied civilizations would be offended. (Willing=non slave)
3) Friends of the dwarf who killed it would be impressed/happy. As well as the dwarf.
4) Friends of the corpse would be offended.
5) Unwilling members of the ex-creature's civilization would... well, it might vary.
6) Traders would be... concerned.
7) Dorfs considering committing a crime might think twice if your fortress is littered with totems.
8) This is a long list, and these probably aren't nearly all the possible situations.

Well, the simple one is have dwarves be more or less bloodthirsty- totems work better than statues to keep the bloodthirsty ones cheerful, but make the passive ones unhappy.

If it's just an animal totem, like they are as often as not, it shouldn't have much of an effect on anybody except possibly elves, the prigs.

I think totems should be built constructions, and one of the effects would be to decrease the morale of enemies with line of sight to the totem, i.e. less aggressive, miss more etc. The effect should be near nothing for totems of basic animals up to fairly noticeable for megabeasts, titans, and forgotten beast, and there should be an entry in the raws that allows them to be immune to the effects. I know if I was attacking a fort and saw gigantic, menacing skulls lining the entrance of that fort, I would have second thoughts about going through with the siege.
