Depends what the Xs are and what direction we are looking at this from. If it is side on and the Xs are floors then you will get the ice melting into water as long as the magma is flowing (ie not always at 7/7). If the Xs are walls then it will not melt.

Could magma flow from a volcano via channel, downhill, under (or over via floors) the ice, then off the map?

It needs to not be always at 7/7. Otherwise it stops heating surrounding tiles. So what you are suggesting will probably not work unless you have it setup perfectly.

So, even a magma river that's huge has no heating properties compared to two tiles, one being a 6/7 and the other being 7/7, if it is only made of 7/7s?

That's goofy.

In my experience, only moving magma melts ice above it. Stationary 7/7 magma doesn't do anything.

I have no idea whether this applies to brooks which may be 'special'. I've only experimented on glaciers.

In terms of melting the ice:

Since only moving magma will do, fill up the river as in your picture.  Then build a constructed floor above it and get a powered pump to put the magma on infinite loop (backtrack over the bottom path).  This will keep the magma moving, your rivers molten, and your fortress extra dwarfy.
