Dwarf Fortress > DF Suggestions
Fishing larger creatures
(1/1)
ColonelTEE3:
Im sorry if this has been suggested, but, i think if it had been suggested before, it'd be a bigger topic for discussion than what i see, or had been made an update yet because it seems kind of blatant to me so here goes:We get imported meat and leather from all these large aquatic creatures; whales, sharks, tigerfish etc. As it is, we cant collect the corpses because obviously, no dwarf can get in that deep of water without drowning. So i suggest one of several possible ideas;Harpoon fishing; using a metal or wooden crafted spear along with some cloth rope, dwarves hurl harpoons into the water, much like they would shoot a crossbow bolt, except that after each "hurl", they'd reel in the spear to get it back for another shot. They could have harpooning ranges of maybe half of what they could crossbow, to make it realistic, and they could harpoon from 1 z level up, in the same way they can fish from 1 z level up.OrBoats; Obviously made of wood, possibly made of components from a carpenter, then constructed together in a dock; much in the same way a siege engine has its parts made seperately, and is constructed at a siege workshop. Dwarves would board the boats, of, i don't know, maybe a couple tiles wide and 10 or so tiles long (it could change from this drastically, im just trying to get the idea out). Boats would only be practical in larger bodies of water obviously, where there are larger fish to be caught. Then, dwarves would board the boat, and you could designate where the boat would drop anchor, and from there, dwarves would do their normal "fishing" job as they would in a river, except out in the ocean, and bait larger creatures like sharks towards their adjacent fishing tile and hopefully catch it.I know its not entirely in favor of dwarven lore to leave their caves for the high seas, then again, its not entirely dwarven to go -OUTSIDE- for -WOOD-, or to hunt creatures outside, so i think this isn't that much farther of a stretch to believe./Discuss
edit: Upon using certain key terms using the search; yes i do realize boats have been suggested many times before. The focus of this suggestion is less so that we make dwarven sea vessels, and more that we get personal access to the exotic water life of dwarf fortress. I mean, think of it, a lachness monster mega beast? A giant Kraken megabeast maybe? And the awesome new meats and leathers?...[ March 07, 2008: Message edited by: ColonelTEE3 ]

The idea of boats has been suggested before if i remember rightly.
I like the bigger fish idea you have here I think it would be a lot of fun. you mention it not being quite right for a dwarf to leave his cave for the high seas and I think in most dwarven mythology they aren't overly fond of boats or the sea but somehow it seems very right to imagine a grizzled old dwarf captaining a galleon in a storm. Even if this idea isn't right for dwarves maybe a bit further down the track when other races become playable and certainly for adventure mode where they already are... It would be very cool to take an adventurer on an ocean journey to the other side of the world and meet strange sea monsters and fish whales.
