There's battle lines being drawn. Nobody's right if everybody is wrong.

So has anyone actually hated yet (in this thread), or has it just been talk about how people are going to at some point?

That barely makes any sense. Oh well, third times the charm I guess. Also does this state anything?

Anyway after an hour of playing with little to no sense of what I'm doing. I can see a good amount of potential. It certainly does not feel like the current dwarf fortress and after skimming through a few things. In the end, the only way this will become a "threat" to anything being done on Toady_One's part is if they even attempt at any of the complexity DF is trying to achieve.

An answer to that above sentence, the game is doing nothing of the sorts. I'd be more worried about EA, flash floods, earthquakes, Disney, flying pigs and other nonsensical things first than this.

Although, in the long run the open source stuff will probably have something else to say. Though, you never can predict how that stuff will turn out. But I really wouldn't worry about that for another four or seven years.

Double post: If we do somehow manage to get past this whole, GC is not DF thing then, that's great! Course, after going through a few internet related things on GC being posted in a bunch of forums, other internet denizens will need get past the whole GC is not DF.

I've been seeing a lot of comments calling GC, "DF done right." Neither the GC community or the creator is liking their creation to that last statement.

O.K., you are trying to tell me one, that without the clear differentiating view of GC not being DF and vice versa, we can not find the truth without examining who is wrong via "drawing lines."

Or two, we need to STOP and LOOK AROUND before our humble forum becomes a animus towards GC.

OR THREE! We need to STOP, LISTEN TO THAT SOUND, LOOK AROUND, SEE WHAT'S GOING ON AND THE MAN SHOULD NOT TAKE US DOWN.

The point is that it's an alpha release of an open source game that's been in development for like 3 months.   There's not much to do yet.

Don't believe there is one, yet. It looks like it's mostly just an early tech demo/alpha build. Out there for testing and getting initial input.

Seems pretty interesting so far, and the promise of racial specialists in the future is intriguing. I do hope it lives up to the promise of 'roguelike city builder', as I've had a vague interest in the concept for a while now, and DF scratches a different sort of (unmitigatedly awesome, yes) itch for me.

Though I seriously wish there was a zoom feature, or at least something along those lines made obvious. Tiny characters are tiny and eye-strain inducing :(

I guess the start of developement is the hardest, just setting up the game overlay and UI and implementing the concepts and such are hard, but once it's all in place it becomes easier.

Actually hardest is to keep team motivated after 6-12 months of initial enthusiasm rush.
I've seen this hundreds times, people announce new game, design UI, draw large ambitious plans, seek for other devs to join the project, and half year later, noone has time to do anything anymore and it goes into stall.
Open-source is great, esp. for 'older' projects, but at current stage I, for one, dont see ability to contribute for myself - most of code are stubs, and theres no clear specification on their implementation (not that it should be expected from one-man team, but that limits ability of others to participate).

But anyway, even while I'm highly biased against this project (he could at least choose less-irritating name for it, unrelated to DF), I'm glad they went FOSS with GPLv3 from the very beginning. That at least gives us forking capability :P

I am not sure the GPL licence is a good idea. Viral licences are... weird. At least it is open - if nothing, it could make nice lighthearthed game to ease the waiting before your dwarves finish that Armok cathedral you designated.

Who gave DF the exclusive rights to the term "Goblin" or "Camp"?

Goblins have been in fantasy longer than DF.  Even if he would have called it Goblin Town or Goblin Nobblin' you still would have complained.  Would you have preferred he used gnomes or something?  Then I think you might complain that he picked a short race of intuitive creatures because dwarfs are short and intuitive.  Can't use elves, monkeys, humans, spiders, birds, cats, dogs, horses... those are all used by DF(!)

There's not much he could name it to avoid some sort of fantasy related conflict.  I think you're looking for a reason to hate on it.  Think of it like this.  You have Unreal Tournament and Quake (and a million other FPS games) why not have DF and GC?  If anything, it may motivate Toady to add more stuff at a quicker pace to keep those donations from going somewhere else.
