Hmm, why not link your bait traps with the magma above them?  Put something light on your bait traps (like kittens), and then surround them with pressure plates linked to go off only on heavy stuff, or at least invaders.  Link the pressure plates to a one-shot repeater to turn off the magma (if necessary, I can't remember if this is needed), and then viola, you have an automated orbital defense system.

I tought you would have used the Dwarven Magma Piston , a X level tower with strategicically placed bauxite floodgates opened by lever :P but your plan is much more reliable!

See your sig.
Yes, yes, my idea would be efficient, practical, etc.  As if a massive hexagonal grid of magma cisterns over the map isn't impractical enough?  I'm mostly thinking that it would be best to reduce the chances that the orbital defense cisterns fail to pour in time (and increase the chance of not setting something up right and ending up with one of your bait kittens setting off the cistern above it, for maximum !!FUN!!).

The automation was something I had considered, but I ditched it for two reasons.

First, that the first member of a group is not necessarily going to arrive when I want the magma to dispense.  With a bait animal, I find it advantageous to wait until the animal is on the brink of death before the pull, as more enemies will have gathered around it at that point.  Wooden cage traps help with this as well.

Second, I don't always see that this will be necessary.  I may want to train my military up on some hapless gobs, or capture a megabeast in a cage trap - either way, I don't want to worry whether or not a wrong step by the attacker will burn my cages, immolate my military and quickly kill any potentially capture-worthy foes.

Also, if I'm correct in what I'll need to make this work, I'm going to have one hell of a lever room.  That alone makes it worthwhile.

In order to fill the landscape with obsidian, you'd need to obsidianize the entire map.
Note: This is to be taken as a challenge.

if he's using the two reservoir system, he could easily have a water reservoir, and a magma reservoir.
drop magma first of course, then drop the water shortly after

Or at close times, attempting to result in boulders of oblivion falling from the sky.
