Migrants of Nondwarven races?

(1/3) > >>

ShadowDragon8685:
It's just a thought, but perhaps exceptional fortresses, or exceptional times, might force members of other races to seek out a life among dwarves - say, if goblins recently destroyed a human township or elven forest, fleeing members of those races might have no option left but to attempt to seek acceptance among the nearest civilized race - the Dwarves. This could create some friction in the fortress, but it might also be useful; elves, for example, would know the secret to getting "elf-Kosher" wooden objects, and as such, would be able to harvest wood without destroying the trees. (And you could trade such ethically-sourced wooden objects to elves, who would surely praise you the effort.) They probably woulden't take too well to underground living, though they might be satisfied if their quarters were at least above the ground's Z-level. Humans would do mundane tasks less efficiently underground, but would otherwise be as good as dwarves at doing things if they're outside, and they'd have a penchant for military applications (that would not be penalized belowgrounds, owing to their adventurous nature.)IE, they could be a hassle to acommodate, but accomodated, provide useful abilities the dwarves lack - such as being able to use bows.

Gorjo MacGrymm:
very cool idea.  you could create 'the foreign quarter' in your fortress.or use them for fodder in the arena, whichever comes first.......

ShadowDragon8685:
It would work best if there was a reason, a 'perk', for taking nonDwarves into the fort, because as it is it's also a bit of a hassle. You'd also need to specifically make human and elf sized armors and such.

Neonivek:
I think you have to remember that Dwarven homes are rather unsuitable for Elves and Humans. So to attract pernament residents I think you would have to go out of your way making suitable quarters and marking them as such.In the Human's case... Non-underground dwellings and in Elves' case Multistory Tree houses made only of acceptable materials.Even then... it would have to be VERY attractive[ June 09, 2008: Message edited by: Neonivek ]

Humans can and do work and live underground, but they woulden't enjoy it too much. Elves might be okay in an earthy layer of ground, "close to nature" as it were.I suppose it would depend primarily on how comfortable they were in their settings. If a human is warm and has a comfortable living space, he's not going to care too much whether he's on the surface or deep in the bowels of the planet.Elves would probably be the same way, except the stuff they want is different - then again, they buy all your hardcore dwarven stuff en masse in the caravans, so maybe they'd rather live with the dwarves anyway. :PI do agree that they should be a bit of a pain in the arse to keep happy, but not impossible to do so.
