The CPU - FPS test
« on: July 25, 2010, 10:54:55 am »

Ok lads, I've uploaded a file which contains DF 31.12 SDL [nothing is modified in the init] + a saved game. After you loaded the save, wait for the 7 starting dwarves to start to dig, and run the game for ~1min. This is a good way to test your CPU power.

Link to the file: http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=2813

My CPU: E8400 3Ghz, not OCed
My FPS [1min test]: 32-41

It says...
Code: [Select]
Intel Core 2 CPU
6400 @ 2.13 GHz
1.60 GHz, 3,00 GB RAM
...about my comp. Whatever that means.

Now then, to the testing.
[...]
25 FPS.
Although it varied from 12 to 29, it usually was flaking around the mid-twenties.

Not necessarily. Trends at the beginning of the game don't necessarily reflect trends late-game. DF scales notoriously poorly. Different computers could diverge in performance at higher population, on more complex maps (caverns broken into, etc.), on larger maps, and so forth. No single map at a single point in time is a terribly good measure, although a 115-dwarf fortress on a standard map with the caverns open and a bunch of animals running around and lots of items lying all over the place might make for a good stress test.

CPU: Intel Core i7 920 D0 2.66Ghz
MB: Asus P6T
FPS [1min test]: 49-57

It fluctuated a lot, but they were the highest and lowest it got. My motherboard tunes it's frequencies automatically so that likely had some impact. I should have set it and only it to use one core and upped the priority of the process. I might try again later.

MB Gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3
i5 750 - game not dedicated to any set core, so sharing with other cores
4GB RAM (DDR3)

i5 750 overclocked to 4.01 GHz:
70 FPS approx
Varied 55-80, but usually around 70.  Note; it initially dropped right down to 55, but then after about 30 seconds began to fluctuate closer to 70.

i5 750 at stock settings of 2.66 GHz:
fluctuating between 50-70, mostly around 60FPS

Wow nice!! So the new quad core processors are better for DF than the old dual core processors even if their clock speed is lower. This i5 750 beat my E8400 easily.

Oh... now my own PC

pentium D 3.2, overclocked a little bit (can't remember exactly)
3GB RAM, DDR2

Sitting solidly at a paltry 31FPS

Core2 due (E8500 3.16GHz) 4Gb Mem

35-40 FPS

If i make the following changes to the init.txt then i get 45-50 FPS

[SOUND:NO]
[PRINT_MODE:STANDARD]
[ARB_SYNC:YES]

--

If i tweak the save to use the Phobeus graphics pack i get identical performance.

protip: i7s, especially the old 1366, are all about the overclock. The 920 in particular is powerful, but mainly because of the 4 cores + hyperthreading. It's initial clock speed is low. DF only uses one core, plus the separate thread for SDL.

However, I have overclocked my 920 d0 stepping up to 4.6ghz from 2.66ghz. Usually I keep it at 4.0ghz though.

Other protip: Speed will vary a lot depending on your GPU (and drivers), which version you're running and under which print options, presumably RAM amount/speed, other running processes, and I don't know how much else. You can't draw too many conclusions using limited data here.

Are you serious? Isn't DF all about CPU power? I mean, will there be an FPS difference if you play with a GTX280 instead of a 9800GT?
While we are at it, what are the best init settings for an average system? [4Gb RAM, 3Ghz dual core, GTX260, OS: Vista x64]

Intel Core 2 Quad 2.50GHz
6.00 GB RAM

32-40 FPS.
If I change the G_FPS_CAP value to 10, the number jumps around a bit more but the range is more like 35-45.

Intel Core 2 Quad @ 2.83 GHz, overclocked to 3.6 GHz
4 GB DDR3 RAM
Runs pretty stable at 48-49 FPS
