maybe you could  get to the site without insta-death on adv. by (T)raveling to the travel tile next to said site, and then walk normally walk to the site, the cavein should occur before you reach the affected area.

holy crap, the whole ground from the surface to the third craven layer in one of my fortresses is held only by a single adamantite spire. im going to try to mine out the spire to see if it would be enough to crash though the magma sea into hell.

No, semi-molten rock is just fully unminable. It isn't even hot. The magma sea, on the other hand, seems to just delete things from existance after a certain depth.
