D&D: The mercenaries - Game Concluding
« on: August 01, 2010, 03:35:40 pm »

I'll probably be starting up an IRC-based D&D game fairly soon, starting at around 5th level. The game will be based around a mercenary company, so switching players in and out should be doable. I will be DM.

Rules:
0. The DM has the last word on rules rulings
1. No paladins.
2. Excessive Rules-lawyering will be punished my meteor.
3. All core books and SRD are allowed.  Expansion books are allowed only with DM permission.
4. No psionic classes. Some psionic item abilities may be allowed.

New rules (as of August 19)
You will have to download and install Maptool b76 and Hamachi.
Maptool can be found at http://www.rptools.net/index.php?page=downloads#MapTool
Hamachi is at https://secure.logmein.com/support/hamachi2/

Hamachi Server is Bay12 Mercenaries Game. Use the IP you get from Hamachi (mine) and port 12345 to join Maptools.

You may now simply select Bay12 from the Maptools server list to join.

I'd be interested in joining... I'll request some rulebooks that I like...

-Complete Champion (Devotion feats)
-Complete Warrior (Swashbuckler class)
-Lords of Madness (Darkstalker feat)
-Dungeonscape (Penetrating Strike alternate class feature)
-Champions of Ruin (Craven feat)
-Tome of Battle (lots of stuff, it's a good fun book  ;D)

Also, how soon are you planning to start? Are we doing point-buy or rolling somehow? Are we starting with standard gold? What time of day/week are we looking at? Etc. Etc.

I was figuring to use a mission system, at least early on, where I would simply post something like "Search for rare spell components. CR6. 7000GP. Wensday 9:00 PM EST" and then anyone who was interested in participating in the mission would simply show up at that time. Once we'd played a few games, I'd probably adjust thing to suit the group. I'd start once we had a few players. Naturally, I'd try to pick a time that would be convenient for everybody.

You can use Complete Warrior and Tome of Battle. I can't allow the others because I haven't read them, and have no idea how powerful what you want to use them for is.

As for your other questions: Standard roll (4d6, discard the lowest) for stats. 4000 GP + standard starting gold.

@Dasleah: The Paladin class is too morally-restricted to work well in a mercenary company. Paladins do what is right, and mercs do what pays best.

I'd be interested. I'll check back when a time/mission is posted and see if it works for me, and prep a char if it does. I can't do Thursdays but my schedule's pretty flexible otherwise.

I might join in, I'm pretty familiar with the 3.5 rules.

Okay, here's the specific stuff I want from the books you haven't read...

Spoiler: Complete Champion (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Dungeonscape (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Lords of Madness (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Champions of Ruin (click to show/hide)

Also, are flaws and character traits from Unearthed Arcana okay?

Most of this stuff is just fun cheese to put on a rogue, I'm not going to avoid the game if you veto any of it.

Yeah, those things are awesome. If you don't have Unearthed Arcana I can scan you the pages for traits and flaws.

Unearthed Arcana is on the SRD.

Also flaws and traits are sorta cheesy >_>

No to the complete champion stuff. Traits are fine, except for honest/dishonest. No to flaws.

My powergaming Rules lawyering Spoil-sport senses are tingling. There are these queer urges driving me to make argument about how over-powered those example feats are. What is wrong with me?

Actually, all the variant UA rules are on d20srd.org - eg. traits (didn't link flaws b/c they got nix'd).

I've been playing a sorcerer in an RP campaign two and a half years now. I think I'm gonna roll up something that can KAPOW things.
