Which font will you be using?
« on: August 08, 2010, 12:24:54 am »

With the forthcoming switch to TrueType support, font choice will no longer be tied to tileset.  This is awesome for many reasons.  One of these reasons is the huge range of fonts available, from Arial to Zapf Dingbats.

Of the thousands of fonts out there, which one do you think best suits Dwarf Fortress?

I for my part am leaning toward Optimus Princeps, or maybe Coronet for that "hand-written chronicle" look.

I plan to try Baskerville. I imagine it will work quite nicely, and it is a personal favorite for body text.

Some nice ideas. Personally I like Trajan, and Papyrus. They are the least used and bestest fonts ever.

Since I run in text mode I'll be using the terminal's default font: terminus.

Probably the current tile-based font.

Same with this guy, 'cept for SDL.

Though I dunno, there are some pretty freaky fonts out there. There are fonts where the letters are made out of elephants. Don't you want your dwarves to be made out of elephants?

What good rougelikes are made of, though in all seriousness, someone can easily make any font tile friendly. It's just... it'll look like crap.

At the risk of inadvertently derailing a humor thread, you all realize that the TTF "conversion" (Baughn admits it'll probably be badly broken for a couple of releases) is for actual text blocks, and not the game display?  Your maps will still use the tileset, but any contextually text display would use the TTF (ok, that reads poorly, but I mean that anything meant to be words and not symbolic representations of tiles or objects on said tiles). So trading screens will actually be readable.

Right. Basically the text is going to have the option of being seperated from the graphics (and from the tile system in general), so you can have one font for all the text and a different font or a tileset for all the graphics.

That being said, I still like the default tile-based font.

For everyone who doesn't understand that the FONT will be seperate from the TILESET,
Toady gave me a super secret early release build and I tried out the best font in the world with it:

Man, it really helps not needing to differentiate between undercase and capital letters!
