GENPOWER
« on: March 21, 2007, 04:15:00 pm »

what is GENPOWER and what does it effect?  It's the general power of a monster?  A dwarf is set to 3, what does that mean exactly?  If I set it to 6, would it mean a normal dwarf would suddenly be twice as powerful, or twice as tough?

no. i think thats a multiplier for how effective things are, that are made from that creatures hide and bones.

thus dragons, with a higher genpower, offer more effective and valuable armor when you skin them and tan their hides.

i think all the known variables are documented in the wiki somewhere.

It's part of the not yet implemented magic system.
MODVALUE is for value and DIFFICULTY is for difficulty. Other known tags are here http://dwarf.lendemaindeveille.com/index.php/Creature_Flags

Really? I always thought it had something to do with world generation (say, a higher genpower makes this creature more likely to appear on the map or some such thing)

Everything I say should be taken with atleast 1 tsp. of salt, and another liter of Dwarven Wine is recommended.

Wow, three different answers.

I think it has something to do with hydroelectricity, myself.

Nope. It has to do with virility and how often each age bracket will spawn offspring.

my answer was totally wrong.  i was thinking of MODVALUE, or whatever.

gen is actually an abreviation for genlath which, if you check the language file, means "seduce" in dwarfen.

clearly it represents the creatures social prowess and seductive abilities.

Has the thread gone on long enough?  We could keep taking suggestions.

So the wiki was correct (most likely because whoever I mentioned it to before put it there).  It was associated to the now-defunct magic system.  It stood for 'general power' and was the way it determined how much ingredients/components were worth in artifacts if it couldn't find any specific powers associated to the material.  So a dragon bone door would have more random powers than a wolf bone door, even if it couldn't find anything dragon-specific to do to doors.  I'm not sure this will last until the next time magic is put in.
