Wait, you successfully switched back and forth between republic and feudal? How long has that worked for?
I imagine since the update that made Government Types an actual thing.
I think the new bit is getting the opportunity to play as the crusader countess.  Outside that mechanic I don't think it's possible for the player perspective to leave a Trade Republic, in Ironman.
(With one other bizarre exception:  Taking the decision to set Rome as your capital, which switched my awesome Roman Republic to feudal  :'()

Yeah you can go from Republic to Feudal via succession, at least a few versions back. I had to restart my Muslim merchant republic game one time because I became feudal after succession, which was a pain in the hole given how hard it is to start the republic in the first place.

Don’t hand out titles to your kids, man.

That can't be right, my court physician recommended castration!

My raging, raving, ravaging Sea King was stopped by that dastardly Fort Level.

It's a shame it still applies even after you've burnt and looted every single adjacent province.

Am I the only one who gets upset when seeing maps and game boards and politics portraying Sardinia as naturally France as opposed to its proper Italian Jurisdiction?

Italy doesn't naturally have jurisdiction. Garibaldi's adventures are terribly recent in the grand scheme of European history.

The House of Savoy controlled Sardina since the early 1700s, well before Garibaldi was ever involved. Over 200 years of ownership by the House that'd eventually form the Kingdom of Italy has to count for something, right?

Of course in the context of Crusader Kings Sardina is either nominally Byzantine, independent and fractured, or Aragonese in whole or in parts. I'm not sure how French jurisdiction can be slapped onto Sardina beyond laziness and Corsica being immediately above it.

Not really. There have been a lot of different situations that lasted 200 years but turned out to be transient.

We've had Gibraltar since the early 1700s, but I sure wouldnt expect it to be de jure england in any historical game.
