ARGH. I deleted the wrong folder when reorganizing my various cluttered DF folders, so I've lost my save and I just can't find the motivation to play the whole year again. I'm sorry for causing a delay and also equally ashamed to be one of The Skipped Ones, but I'll just have to ask to be skipped.
(a bit of advice: the flooded central staircase isn't perfectly sealed... which makes the situation a bit more urgent. Just a tip.)

So we got monsters above, monsters below, dwarves in the middle and a party in the dining hall. Sounds good to me.
If all else fails, remember one thing:  kittens are delicious, nutritious little goblin-baiters, cavern explorers, and ambush-finders.

How about using R-Studio or something similar?

This makes me wonder if the fortress will survive till my turn comes :)
Oh well... if it doesn't I'm sure that I will be able to hunt up a old save and revive the succession game from a earlier point in time, courtesy of Urist McWizard!

No, that was directed at the save which I am now downloading.

EDIT: Started playing. Holy shit.

EDIT2: I think I'm going to wait a while (Wed.) before tackling this. First priority is aquifer plugging, and I have a plan, but we'll lose a well temporarily.

Diary of Urist Imiknorris, 1st Granite

Apparently I'm in charge of the fortress now. Must have been one hell of a party last night. Anyway, the first thing to catch my attention was the state of the central stairway, and I believe I have found the cause:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I found some notes left by an overseer early in the fort's life:

While digging the new dining room we encountered a slight problem.

Damnit, aquifer! Luckily no-one drowned, as I had the foresight to install doors.

Apparently the digging was interrupted by damp stone and the miners decided to see where all that water was coming from. A ghost seems to have destroyed the rightmost door, letting the water into the middle of the fortress. Obviously the water itself is a secondary problem and nothing can be done until the aquifer is sealed back up. The hole in the aquifer is currently feeding a well and a pump which is itself feeding another well, so I may have to be cautious in my solution. I decided to go up to the surface and see if anything could be done from there.

What luck! A section of natural wall is sitting right above the breach point. I'll give the order to drop it into the depths immediately after I get rid of the stuff in its path.

The depths are fine. It's the shallows that are the problem.

Would you guys be okay with me running dfcleanmap? After the flooding is dealt with, I'm going to try and salvage some FPS.

EDIT: Apparently, when whoever installed graphics did so, they forgot to re-add the bone block reaction. I threw that back in, so we'll have more "diverse" building materials.

It occurs to me that I have yet to choose a name for myself as leader. That changes today, in part because of the plan to seal the aquifer, and the success (so far) thereof. I may be an animal caretaker, but my interests are much more mechanical in nature.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Pictured is the new bone bridge that will be serving as a garbage disposal for the rest of my rule. But enough of that - the collapse went perfectly:

Spoiler: After the Collapse (click to show/hide)

Now we just have to drain the flooded area.

Diary of Urist Imiknorris, 3rd Shale
Rigoth the appropriately-named bone carver is now a mother. On a separate and unrelated note, Pyromaniac has mandated the creation of a trumpet. I don't think so, sir mayor. The craftsdwarves will make whatever they damn want.

I heard... sounds today, as I was climbing the stairway to the forges. It sounded like some horrifying creatures were in pain.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Given the type of horrifying creatures we normally see here, I can only assume it's good news, and that perhaps the beasts in the caverns aren't immune to each other's poisons.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Also, I found this guy in the ocean. Seriously, this is not a way to kill a goblin. It wastes a perfectly good cage.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

EDIT: Some more hastily-scribbled notes

Failcannon and the surrounding lands have been made a county.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Spot the odd dwarf out.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Also, I have naught but faith in my drainage system.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The rest of the page is illegible due to water damage

Eh, it's killing the other beasts with its secretions. At least I assume it's Zolak, because there are about seven of the fuckers sitting in the cavern three slime lake and it's the only one not rotting.

EDIT: We may lose the four dwarves that were caught in the forging area when the water hit. They're all thirsty, and the flooding shows no sign of letting them out soon. I'm trying to dig another path down, but...

EDIT2: Goddamn magma teleportation means the drainage didn't work (I was draining it down the stairway to the forges, diverting it with floor hatches at a certain point after which it would pour into the magma sea, but the magma splashed back up and the obsidian got stuck)
