It MIGHT, just might, be possible to make the children vermin, change there tile to a single dot like the rats, and change there name to 'Plump helmet man spawn'.

Are these even sentient?

Every sentient creature i've seen so far has either been Friendly, Hostile, Merchant, or Invader.

All the Plump Helmet Men are just considered Wild Animals.

Lots of creatures that are supposed to be at least semi-intelligent (like Tigermen) show up as Wild Animals.
