Is there anything you didn't know about the game until recently? Post it here.
For example:
I recently found out that waves instantly fill any pit they cross with 7/7 water

I did not know that in DF2010 whips had become armor-rending monomolecular death.

Now I know.  :'(

How to set hotkeys.

I knew they existed, vaguely, in that sometimes I'd hit the wrong key and the menu would pop up, but most of my forts have only consisted of 4-5 zs, tops.

This one goes down 40 and the scrolling is making it clear that hotkeys are there for a reason.

I knew that posessed moods don't give a level-up bonus to skills, but only lately have I come to the conclusion that FEY moods also do not give skill bonus.

That melt and dump are mutually exclusive.  I used to manually separate stuff I wanted saved for melting from the junk, either by stockpiles, stocks screen, or whatever.   Now I just put everything into a temporary pile, mass dump then mass melt.  Anything that can be melted won't be dumped.

Suspending a job will still let other jobs in that workshop happen.  Good for automatic tasks.  For example, my legendary weavers workshop has the collect webs job suspended, so all he does is the auto-weave dyed thread.  The trainees have the weave thread job suspended, so they just collect webs.

I kinda knew about both of those for a while, I just didn't realize how practical they were until recently.

I knew that posessed moods don't give a level-up bonus to skills, but only lately have I come to the conclusion that FEY moods also do not give skill bonus.

I've noticed that the skill ups from moods doesn't seem to take effect right away. I think the moods bug it, so the game thinks they're still their old level instead of legendary.  Gaining another level should fix it.  I was going to test it out some more, but it got stuck on my to do list.

aww crap i fotgot to mention, you could mass stockpile things into a single channeled tile without taking up any important space, just by making a garbage dump next to it and mass claiming the dumped items.

That wells desalinate water if they're built above the waterline. I think my next fort will be a dwarven beach house.

om nom tasty doggies ;)

And I am going to be honest here, I also had 3 granite stone so I could put up all 3 metalworking workshops and leave them, but I forgot all of the rest, so that is what helped me figure out the destruct the wall on a stick thing. (as opposed to using mechanisms and levers for safety).

I just found out that it is possible to stop playing Dwarf Fortress.  Undesirable, but possible.
