Skulls as building materials.
« on: August 18, 2010, 10:34:33 am »

I've had a look for similar topics, and I couldn't see any, so here is my suggestion:

I would like more options for using the skulls of my enemies (and/or friends) to decorate my fortress.

Things I would like to see: Skull goblets, Thrones of Skulls, Skulls as an actual building material (roads paved in skulls, towers of skulls and so on).

I'd mod it in myself, but I don't have the first idea of how to go about it.

Maybe it would make more sense to simply make skulls into a buildable item, like a mounted trophy or whatever, and then allow it to be built on walls, etc.

There's this thread: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=61055.msg1385442#msg1385442

Anyway, it is possible to mod.  Unfortunately, the wiki is very poorly organized right now regarding the new things you can do to the raws.  http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Shaostoul's_Guide is your best bet.

You basically need to open up your custom workshop.txt in the raws and plagerize or customize as much as you see fit on the Soapmaker Workshop that is already there.  (There's a utility for making custom workshops more easily.)  Make it a "skull furnisher" or whatever.  Then make the reactions (just see the Shaostoul's Guide) using MATERIAL_REACTION_PRODUCT skulls as a material (http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Material_token), and with Bonecarver as a skill.  Should give you fully functional skull thrones.

This would be pretty nice (though way down on my personal wish list, honestly). We already have a Blood God, and this way we'd have Skull Thrones to match. Of course, then you have to ask yourself: How many skulls do I need to make a skull throne? Do bigger skulls count more? What about enemies that lack skulls?

It's the Volume and Mass thread all over again! :P

Skulls and bones only makes rather simple walls (usually the are decoration rather then an actual wall).

So I don't know how it would work exactly.

Thanks for the link to the mod.

I think it would be fun to use large skulls for furniture (elephant skull throne, dragon skull weapon rack), medium for crafts (goblin skull goblet, human skull crown), and small for decorations (cat skull amulet menacing with spikes of lizard skull).  All of these could use bones as well.

I think only the dwarf who did the killing would be able to craft skulls from intelligent creatures.

I think skull trophies should be something a titled warrior would demand, you know "Urist McAwesome the Slayer Of Blood is demanding the skull of Gobbo McSieger to be shrunken and put on an amulet for him!"
