weapon equip question

if i have my legendary marksmen dwarves carry both a sword and a crossbow would they use the sword in melee combat at all or do they tend to only  use one of their weapons?

You can't equip them with both. They'll just crossbow-whip enemies.

Use copper or silver crossbows for the best effect.

well they are kinda wearing both atm, so should i just modify my uniform and remove the swords?

You should probably test it - I suspect they'll prefer their crossbows, but having, say, a war hammer as backup could work pretty well, as it uses the same skill.
