Massive *SPOILER* (and awesomeness)
« on: August 30, 2010, 07:45:06 pm »

What's up?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I just colonized hell.

Edit: I uploaded the save, link below. It only has the beginning of a Hell Fort, so I'd love it if others would play around with it and show what you created!

BTW, care to post the save?
Sure, here you go http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=3026

Things to watch out for: I have had problems with squirrel demons with toxic blood(!) that dwarves used to drag around, so finally I gave up and forbade all the corpses with any trace of it. That's why there are corpses everywhere in hell and a pump to clean the floor up in the only way known to dwarves, with lots and lots of magma.

Edit 2:

Here is my finished hell fort if you want to look around, http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=3089 , and also a story about it.

Edit 3:

I finally got Stonesense working in Linux, so I have some 3D pictures of the final version of the fortress. I've stopped now, I simply don't have the patience for anything more. All I've done since the last save is adding another magma pipe and a magma lake at the bottom of a pit just to give my greatest grave a moat. Warning: Huge images, except for the last one.

Top level (2 mb)
Workshop level (1.7 mb)
Meeting hall level (1.5 mb)
Grave chamber (132 kb)

Try harder. That hardly looks like a colony.

I'm not sure what to do, though, so any suggestions are welcome. Move everything down there? Build a city? Or just leave a giant monument?

Well, if you've got a toehold, the solution is to create an impenetrable network of defenses and establish a permanent fort down there.  Especially if you can require caravans to descend in to hell in order to trade with you.

Do you always look at it in ASCII?

You get used to it, I don't even see the ASCII.  All I see is blacksmith, miner, goblin.

You need to carve a barracks into the walls so you have the necessary reserve forces to defend yourself.  Expand by building actual bedrooms!

Build a ton of siege weapons, massive Adamantium walls, A giant monument, Experiment with the glowing pits, Attempt to catch a demon, then use it for science, etc.

Over the next 5-7 years, relocate your ENTIRE FORTRESS to hell.

That's pretty much what I've done, except it's impossible to dig in slade, so it all has to be built.

I might be able to, actually! The adamantine veins are too thin to allow a 3 tile passage, but I just realized that of course I can just make obsidian.

Sorry, I thought the engravings were non-slade stone at first.

*Nods in approval.*  Damn, that's impressive.  I've done all the science I can think of in Hell via short-lived expeditions, cheating, and adventurers, but a working fort is new to me.  The pits are identical to glowing pits and bottomless pits from 40d, as far as I can tell, and I have seen no evidence that anything spawns out of them.  Wall off the edges and you're invincible.
Alternatively, wandering demons won't rape your FPS like the first batch that spawns does, so if you ever wanted to build a hell-cannon that shoots demons or something...

Consider investing in a hell-chimney, to let those flying demons get some fresh air. Seal off your above-ground exits and turn your fortress into an evil citadel, slaying all passing caravans and the resultant sieges.
