We'll probably all be eaten by carp
« on: August 30, 2010, 10:17:45 pm »

Ever wondered what would happen if some relative newbies and a couple of experienced players did a succession game?   Wonder no more, dear friend!  My money is on Starve To Death, though Eaten By Local Wildlife is a strong contender.

This game is still getting all of its stuff together, and is admittedly a rather disorganized mess.  I kinda like it that way.

Players currently:
Jerm
Fivex
V12US
Canalan
Goodguy3
Tsarwash
iceball3
Flagrarus
lolghurt

dropped out?
ottottott
Bayar

Your turn is three RL days long, during which time you'll play the fort for 1 year of game time.  Your 3 day turn begins and ends at Midnight Eastern Standard time (that's GMT -5 presently).

The last current save, by goodguy3, at the end of the year 1052 is at:
http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=3046

Schedule:
1.  Fivex,  8/31 to 8/31 [finished]
2.  goodguy3,  9/1 to 9/3 [finished]
3.  ottottott, 9/4 to 9/6 [dropped]
4.  bayar, 9/7 to 9/9 [dropped]
5.  jerm, 9/10 to 9/12  [finished]
6.  tsarwash, 9/13 to 9/15 [Current]
7.  canalan, 9/16 to 9/18
8.  flagrarus, 9/19 to 9/21
9.  v12us, 9/22 to 9/24
10.  Fivex, 9/25 to 9/27
11.  Flagrarus, 9/28 to 9/30
12.  lolghurt, 9/31 to 10/2
13.  iceball3, 10/3 to 10/5
14.  goodguy3, 10/6 to 10/8
15.  ?, 10/9 to 10/11

People seem to want dwarves named after them, which is a little odd to me (what if he dies/is eaten?) but okay fine.  I'm new to succession games, and it seems to be the norm.  Note that it is also okay to do semi-nasty things to the dwarves of players who have dropped out.

There's few 'rules'.
1.  Don't intentionally break or sabotage the fort.  That's just not cool.
2.  Insane or sane projects are fine.  Traps, drawbridges, magma pumps, aboveground castles, mazes, bowling alleys, you name it.
3.  Label your levers.

The schedule:
You have 3 days to play a year of the fort.  You should get a PM or a note on this board when the previous player is done.  Download the file, and play a year.  Upload the save, PM or post here to let the next player know that he/she is up.
If you have not uploaded by the time the other player's turn starts, we'll give a few hours, but then you get skipped and we move to the next player, who downloads the previous save and continues the process.
Similar for write-ups, they need to be done in a timely manner.  Either during your turn, or within 24 hours of the end of your turn.  Beyond that and we just miss your writeup, which will make everyone sad.  If you don't like writing tons, a simple brief recap is fine.  If you like writing, then write away!  Entertain us!
When it is your turn, it would be mighty kind of you to post and let us know that you've got it, so that we don't end up sitting around twiddling our thumbs while you backpack through the Himalayas.

If you finish early and upload, sure, we'll bump the schedule up a little.  Be sure to let me know, and the player that's next in line.

We'll keep it going round and round as long as its fun and we're not all dead of starvation.

I'll put other good stuff in this here post as it continues.

Woo!  A reply!

Okay, so what I'm hoping to do is to establish 3 day turns.  I don't want folks waiting forever for a shot, but I can't quite hope to do the 24 hour turn thing.

And then there were two.

Edited midpost.  Mr. BadSyntax, I won't immediately disqualify you.  If you're willing to at least *pretend* to be a newbie, I'm sure that this will be sufficient.

Does this work? It has flux(marble), sand, a brook, a volcano, every type of layer(except for aquifiers).
The only thing is that elves are extinct
If we are going to embark here, what will we embark with?

Well... What the heck! I'll join! My community game went down the drain and I'm not going back to Pearlrings for a turn. I'm not so new to Dwarf Fortress but I still have lots to learn and this is my 2nd succession game.

Sign me up for a turn, but I won't be able to play until September the 20th, so put me after that date in the schedule.

Well... I hope you can figure out what to take. Can we each have a dwarf named after us? I would like someone who has as many of the following skills: mining/masonry/engraving/mechanics/building designing. Metal skills are OK too but not that important. Oh and could you please make the embark rectangle smaller? Like 2x5 so that the volcano and brook would still be on it? We don't actually need big areas and it makes the came horribly laggy for people with computers like mine.

Oh wow.  Alright, I'll post here shortly when I get to work!

In brief though:
Yeah, that spot works.
I'll put a schedule together.

Does what to start with need to be a community decision?

I usually do 3 miners, a mechanic, a mason, a boss/carpenter and a stonecrafter.
Lots of food and booze, seeds for the 4 booze-producing underground crops.
An anvil, in case I end up never seeing a caravan.
But that's just me.

Since it seems we are already giving thoughts then...
In this case I would start with a miner/stoneworker, miner/stoneworker/mechanic, doctor, leader/building designer/appraiser/organizer/record keeper, woodworker, metalsmith of all sorts and a harvester/plant gatherer/butcher/brewer/animal trainer.
A pickaxe, training axe, rope, food, seeds, anvil... maybe something more... Also a female dog, male dog, female kitten, male kitten.

I'm probably the only one here new enough to starve everyone ( I don't really have a lot of time to play, well, anything. Someday...)
But at least I'll be watching and trying to remember some of the stuff you guys do to not die.

People involved, not really in any order:

Jerm
Fivex
BadSyntax?
ottottott
V12US
Bayar
Canalan
Goodguy3
Tsarwash

I say current version (31.12)
How do folks feel about 3 days for turn around?  Too short?  Too long?  Policy would be that you have to have the file uploaded by say Midnight Eastern Standard Time (GMT -5) on the end of the third day so that it can be continued.

Do folks usually do all the stuff here on this board, or do we need to establish an offsite spot for posting and screenshots and so forth?

Any other adminy type stuff that needs to be done?

I'll put a schedule together soon and we can formally get going.
