Recently inspired to play Dwarf Fortress again
« on: September 29, 2010, 09:16:11 pm »

I was recently inspired to play Dwarf Fortress again. The cause? A gem show. There was serpentine and such, and I had fond memories of Dwarf Fortress.

I also discovered some new lava formations that I haven't seen before. Hooray for DF!

Geography was one of those things I found astoundingly boring, but playing dwarf fortress has made geography fun!

Urist McMiner Unearths a strange pad. He trembles as he inspects it's time saving features. Knowing no 1 dwarf must posess this power, he quietly drops it into the nearest chasm and never speaks of it again.DwarfPad

I'm crazy interested in geology now. And as a result have learned that eastern MA (in the US, where I am) used to be part of Africa back in the day (WAY back in the day). Good stuff!

That is a wasteful idea that recklessly endangers life. I applaud your genius!
There are as many ways to play the game as there are socks on a battlefield.

Pretty sure you mean geology, which is the study of rocks and minerals and stuff underground, where geography is more concerned with stuff like borders between countries and regions of plantlife etc, you know, elfy surface stuff 8)

All of my knowledge of stone layers, mineral and gem contents, and ore comes from dwarf fortress. It also provides a small amount of insight into erosion, volcanicity, drainage and the like.

Geography is Fun!

I have a deep, strong, secret wish to see something in the world that reminds me of a fluffy wambler.
