This is the kind of thing that leads up to the plot of that movie The Happening, where it turns out everybody killed themselves when they smelled all the plants farting at them.

Indeed.  It's an entertaining JRPG and I did enjoy it.  As a sequel to Chrono Trigger, on the other hand, it was definitely divisive.
