I know population was a factor in 40d but I'm not sure how it has changed in this version. I believe it is a combination of several factors, not a single trigger. Either way, I know it isn't as simple as the OP fears. I have had large 80-120 dwarf forts crumble to ruin without any goblins showing up.

Hell, the caravans are uniformly all 2.5 months late, from all three civs at that!

Caravans arrive in the second half of the last month of the season. It's been that way since April. Sieges too.

I accidentally captured the leader of our local goblin civilization and ever since then my sieges have been less interesting.  She was apparently the one that tamed all the exciting underground beasties that your invaders come stomping in on, but since I've now got her in a glass cage in my meeting area, all I get are goblins and some trolls.

So now I'm trying to piss off the elves and humans to get more interesting sieges again.

I don't understand, though that is about right with anything DF related.
I just hope he dies the same death that all dwarfs deserve: liver disease.

Alternativley, Ledgekindred, you could put the cage outside, hook a lever to it, and then let her go so the Goblin seiges become more interesting again.
And then repeat this process untill she unfortunatly dies or stops turning up.

Or release her in a sealed room with the human guild representative.

Or release her in a sealed room with the human guild representative.

Something that could be combined...
release her in a sealed room with the human guild representative,
which has lever operated doors, that lead to freedom
