Can't command squad from different z-level

Having any active squad, and pressing "x" to try and station them somewhere, while looking at a different z-level than they are on, doesn't find the squad - it reports "no squads nearby", no matter how close they are.

You can get around this by being on the same x-level, selecting the squad then pressing l to lock it and then move to where you want to station them.
