Dwarf Fortress Prospector
« on: September 12, 2010, 03:53:12 pm »

I wrote a program today to replace prospector from dfhack. It's better in a way that it shows how exactly materials listed look in-game, it shows some properties of them and material value, and in tooltip windows it shows pictures of these stones from real life (it's always a hassle to look these things up). It reads everything from raw files so mods will probably work as well. Program itself is very raw, and I'm (yet) open to suggestions. Here are some screenshots:

Nice. try replacing degrees Celsius with degrees Urist, and you may want to move this to the modding forum.

What tileset is that for the ores? Looks like Phoebus for the regular stones...

Also -- are those pictures available for every stone? What'd you put for slade? :P

Eagle_eye: I'll think of adding an option for Urist in setting, or maybe I'll remove all temperature altogether and replace it with magma-safe/not magma-safe.

veok: Download and have a look. All pictures are untouched in materials directory, so you don't even have to run the program. Tileset is Phoebius modification, there are lots of them in data/art directory, I just chose one.

Where do you put it so that it finds it's way to the RAW folder?

Neat. You should have the program look in the init file and find the actual tileset the game is currently using though.
I have alot of files in the art folder, and it picks the ASCII curses before it finds Ironhand/whatever for me.

Also those images combined make for a decent file-size. Don't know if you can compress them a bit more or what. Doesn't really matter though.

EDIT: Also you should host this on DFFD. The download is pretty slow/quirky.

LucasUP: It reads the tileset from init.txt, from the [FONT:] tag currently. I'll improve that (to consider all other [XXX_FONT:] ones) later. I'll upload it to dffd when it's a bit more mature, splitting program and pictures in two, so the program itself will be pretty small.

breadbocks: push the settings button.

As far as temperature goes, have settings for urists, degrees celius, kelvin, and degrees farenheit (the last two are optional.  and i think of the urist scale like kelvin.  no "degrees") Make magma safe either a yes/no box or a colored dot or something that is on every stone.

Have degrees Urist and then have it coloured red for non-safe and green for magma safe.

What color was the mailman's hair?

@Automatic: Ah I see, cool!

Hey would you be okay with this being included in the Lazy Newb Pack in the future? Wouldn't be untill next version of DF and until whatever update/version of this program you deem appropriate. I might want to use a no-picture (or small-picture?) version for file-size.
But no pressure :).

For now just linking this as a recommended additional download.

LucasUP: Yeah, I' perfectly fine with whatever. I'm planning to release source code a bit later so that if I go berserk on community it'll still be able to salvage the program.

I like the way it looks myself, and I do agree that the program needs to show if a given material is magma safe or not.  Otherwise it looks good and works fine for me.    Thanks

You know, this app was awesome! Much easier on the eyes than the DFHack tool (even though the functionality is nearly the same). Thanks so much!
