It's not super demanding, but S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is a pretty good choice.  Especially with the Complete 2009 mod which offers a lot in terms of graphical beauty.  The creators even boast it as being comparable to Crysis.  Personally, I only have experience with Shadow of Chernobyl, but I assume the others are good choices as well.  Any way about it, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. is good fun (and terrifying).

Try Dead space. I hear it sucks up alot of CPU and graphics power. Looks like it to. AND its a good game.

The Supreme Commander games, or at least the first, should test your system when a lot of units are present. It was built to support dual and quad cores after all.

ARMA 2 will likely be unplayable if you crank the settings up too high and go into some of the more built up areas.

Metro 2033 brought my gaming laptop to it's knees and then it cried.

I concur. I recently upgraded my old desktop and I decided to enable all the bells and whistles. Damn, it's pretty. Stalker, eat your heart out! The dust, the gasmask blur, the claustrophobic subway, ... It scares the bejeezus out of me. It all feels so "lifelike". My old desktop would have screamed at me, but the new one doesn't even flinch. Something I can't say about me. Damn moaning monsters ... You owe me a night's worth of sleep!

X3 Terran Conflict is also a good benchmark. Run that at full resolution and details while having a massive gunfight between some capital ships. So pwetty.

Fallout 3 and Hellgate London on the low end of the scale
Bioshock and its expansion/sequel (it didnt really feel like a new game to me)
Crysis 2
Dwarf Fortress on a 16x16 embark, find the haunted house in the carnival.

I agree with the SC comment. Though I tend to find that larger maps cause more CPU than more units.  I can handle tons of units on a small map, but even like 50 units on a 64x64 reduces me to like 2 fps.

Also agree with Terran Conflict. I cant run it at all on high graphics.

Course, my computer isnt the greatest, but those games seriously eat it.

Stalker: Call of Pripyat has pretty high demands.

But if you really want to push it. Oblivion, with a high res texture pack and this. http://planetelderscrolls.gamespy.com/View.php?view=oblivionmods.detail&id=2420

Wow.  With the addition of more perspective, that makes Oblivion look downright tiny.

I mean, I kind of knew that, but even having been playing it a lot recently I didn't realize how small it really was.
