Dealing with Carp
« on: September 25, 2010, 07:59:21 am »

I have a river full of carp right outside my fort. They haven't been a problem yet, but i've heard nightmare stories about these buggers. How do I deal with them? I assume fishing is out of the question, so do I need marksdwarves? If so, how do I make sure they keep their distance?

Thanks!

They aren't as much of a threat in DF2010 as they were in 40d.

And since it's a river, they'll likely run away from the dwarves anyway. You only ever need to be worried if they're in a static water source, since they'll count that as "Being backed into a corner" and then get their murder on.

If you're playing a newer version (i.e. not 40d), carp aren't the fortress-destroying monstrosities you've read about in the past.

Otherwise, well... train those crossbow dwarfs, stay away from the river and Armok have mercy on your soul.

That's good... how would I go about catching one then? A convenient source of bone bolts would be nice :)

Naw, we just mod in the elephants back. As a civ who use steel armour and mounts. Carp are harder to do that for.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

Fish in general are not threatening - alligators and crocodiles, now, that's a different matter.

I've always fancied fish as the natural predator of Dorfs.

Go to the modding subforum, you seek the Fortress Defence mod.

Bone crossbow bolts.

Yes. Clearly a bug that ought to be fixed in the future, but exploit it in the meantime.
