Rock-cut Architecture
« on: September 24, 2010, 04:39:24 pm »

Ok, this thread is to discuss rock-cut architecture in Dwarf Fortress.

Obviously I don't mean underground, as interiors are 99% of the time rock-cut. I mean the outer area, the "facade" or front or entrance or whatever. I've recently become fascinated by that kind of construction, such as Petra, and this is my first attempt at that.

Obviously you need a suitable mountain. The higher the better. And enough room for a road in front of it, probably excavated also. For now, I'm using Stonesense to preview it, I'll add screenshots with another viewer if it looks better.

Anyway, this is the link in DFMA: http://mkv25.net/dfma/map-9615-rockbreeds

Comments are welcome.

EDIT: Forgot to add that, in my opinion, for rock-cut architecture to look, er, "rock-cutty", a significant amount of the original rock should stay untouched. In theory you could carve an entire smooth castle from a single mountain leaving no stone wall unsmoothed, but then it will just look like it was built from the ground up.

Looks pretty darn cool. I've always wanted make a feature or two like that in my fort, but it just takes so much planning and effort.

You could start a zoo and end up with a natural history museum, I'm sure no one would mind.
