So much nicer here.
« on: September 29, 2010, 01:26:19 am »

Recently gotten into Minecraft, right around the time that DF had that "won't run on Macs" little problem, and frustrated with my latest fort, I decided that my semi-annual break from DF would be good. Only so much Dwarven stupidity I can take*. ANyways, I feel the need to say how much... better the Bay 12 forums are. The response time is better, the people are helpful. You're all much smarter, and more attractive. When people think about what kind of forums The Old Spice Man would frequent, they know it's not he Minecraft forums, or Neopets. It's Bay 12, with the lovely gray-and-black colour schemes, and in jokes about Kitten murder and beating elves to death with their own children.

I... I love you all so much within reason! When paypal finally pulls it's head out of my ass and let's me buy Minecraft I'm donating twice as much to Tarn Adams as I'll pay to Notch.

This is a remarkably civil and well behaved forum.  I suspect it's partly due to the fact that you need to have quite a lot of patience to get into DF, so most of the more troublesome individuals get weeded out of the community itself.  Even so, I am often pleasantly surprised by these forums.

It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

For a forum as old as this one is you have to admit there is still shockingly few.

Just how would one troll a forum capable of discussing at length the most efficient method of trapping mermen to extract, process and sell their bones? We don't exactly have much of a tendency for outrage here. I guess you'd have to preach Jack Chick or something?

As somebody who has spent quite some time on the-site-that-shall-not-be-named, the bay12 forums are a really nice change of pace. I love the community behind DF so much its astounding. I rarely see people get mad at each other in these threads, and even when they do, they seem to retain their maturity and don't turn into babbling idiots.

I never thought that could happen on an internet message board, so I must say, I'm quite shocked.

Before I got into DF, I was into this Harry Potter online rp thing, and their forum was appalling. Everyone bitched to everyone, and people who gave their opinions were considered trolls. It was like high school combined with the ugliest people one can ever see. I swear, i must be the best looking (read: average) Harry Potter fan, if I'm to take that forum as a pop. sample.

Then I get here and get called a deity for my wordsmithing. Hell, I've never felt more welcome on a forum.

Plus, someone chewed me out for making an MST3K reference that they didn't get, asking me the relevance on talking about Tom Servos on a thread about Crows.

Honestly.

It helps that the average age here is probably well into the 20s; when you look at the Minecraft forums, however...

What's the average age on the Minecraft forums? 12?

At the very least, I think we're looking at single digits here.

Plus, those of us who frequent the forum and are below the average age are mostly fine :)

Sig'd.
Though it does require a highly specialised definition of the word 'nice'...

Never used Dwarf Therapist, mods or tilesets in all the years I've been playing.
I think Toady's confusing interface better simulates the experience of a bunch of disorganised drunken dwarves running a fort.

Honestly, I've never seen a flamewar on this forum, ever.  I've seen nice polite discussion about why Urist McForumer's deathtrap of magma won't work and a slightly patronizing suggestion as to how to make it better, followed by Urist McForumer agreeing readily to try it.

I think it's because with a game like this help better be appreciated or else you're screwed.
