Probably somewhere in their history they implemented a babby waterfall with cats instead of dwarves.

Pretty easy project. Just set up a repeater with a couple of pressure plates involved to make a few sets of hatches opening and closing. Two tiles away from this you have a great deal of female cats roped up. Cats pop out kittens. It's crowded up there so they try to spread out, and whoops the floor just vanished. Provided your caterfall is tall enough they take care of themselves making room for more cats to catch spores from the one male cat on the map. The cats do all of the work.

Hm, I've thought of a way to do this:

~ = water; R = chain (the island is 3x3)
A female cat is chained here. Right above the chain you have a lever-triggered floor hatch with water all over it. When you see that a kitten is born, you open the hatch for a second and immediatly close it again. The kitten is washed off the island, the cat remains.

refinement: pressure plates right outside of the cat's range that only the newborn kitten can press, to automate the system.

It takes a special kind of mind to read "the carnal cat-fountains" and get inspiration for an invention. 
When I read it I got inspiration for nightmares.... Maybe I don't deserve to be playing this game...

The "Gorge of Echoes"? This sounds like a Chaucer euphenism.

DF loves to generate such things.
