No, I was never police material, I fear. I was, however, planning to become a man of the cloth. It is very fascinating work with an engaging subject, I would get an opportunity to serve the community and I would provide something meaningful. Not to mention, I cannot think of a better top boss.

That is very much on ice, since my church (well, not mine-mine, but still, mine) is in the middle of a frightful mess, and I fear that what will come out the other side is not something I can stand for in a pulpet. Plan B would, of course, be to start my own church with hookers and blackjack, but that seems a bit advanced. I will do something else. Heaven and Earth both heaves a sigh of relief, no doubt.

Still. Would not have helped against TempAcc's slut-arrest, I fear... I will come quietly, constable.

I knew that you would expose me eventually. If anything, it is a relief.

I do not know how much 'free time' there is in such a job (I would hope a lot, it does sound frightfully boring), but if there is, consider writing a book, or doing a web-comic, or become an expert-knitter on the side. At least until you come to the point where you believe can switch, if it does not feel fulfilling enough to make the button pushing more sufferable. It might not sound terribly meaningful on paper, but little projects like that might help. Making something little, something fun, that amuses people does have meaning, and I am sure that it would help, for the nearest time.

It is better than going nuts, for certain.

I work nine hours over the night stacking shelves in a shop, sleep for eight or nine hours, wake up for three or four hours, then go back to work.

I've just finished doing four nights of that, then I've to be in on Thursday for three nights of it.

Seriously hate it. Pays well though.

The newspaper or the porn flic?

Welcome to the wonderful world of racists, where the most racist people are the ones calling others racist.

WOOOWWW!!!

So a famos pop culture critic who did a rather popular stint into videogame criticism...

Apparently went on record later saying they don't even play videogames or like them.

I mean... it isn't surprising given the content of their criticisms/reviews but it is still surprising given that they were doing it for money at the time... they were a professional...

I guess that explains their lack of research or basic understanding of the topics they brought up. As well as the criticisms that amount to "Videogames themselves are bad"

Also YES I am being vague on purpose. I don't want to turn this into a flame war...

Really common for book and video game critics to not read the media they judge. Film critics tend to be able to watch the films they criticize owing to their shorter investment periods, I was immensely amused hearing of one literary critic who was barred from judging at one of those award things because she criticized the other judges for not having read the books they were giving prizes for lmao
It pains me reading video game reviews or book reviews from people who have clearly not read the book or played the game, or else have done so in such a brief manner that they skimmed through - the best examples would be the Nier/Drakengard games in which shit tons of critics played the first chapters of the games and then rated it lowly, not realizing they had missed 90% of the game in their haste.

In their defence, they must consume a lot of media in order to criticize it, thus they must either love the media in question with a passion, or blaze through it with dewrito mercenary attitude and lacklustre attachment to life's cultures. Being a professional need not mean you enjoy it, indeed, many may have thought they would enjoy it only to find out they actually had no interest in the reality, stuck there because they need the job to pay their bills.

10/10 ign, needs more DLC

Almost as bad is the reviewer that loves a certain genre. Rated super high, but turns out to be mediocre at best? Particularly when most of their ratings are quite accurate? Watch future ratings for that genre and you may start to see a pattern.

Needless to say it's a good idea to use several sources, but human nature leads us to trust one over the others...

Yeah but you can at LEAST assume that book critics and videogame critics would at least read or play in general... That they have a firm grounding in the topic.

This is expecting a book critic to be someone who... doesn't read... like at all.

I mean Roger Ebert critiqued all of videogames (and wasn't well liked for it or his views... and showed his ignorance in a few areas) but he wasn't doing an in-depth analysis it was mostly him weighing in on the issue. He wasn't doing a multiple essay expose on why videogames aren't art.

Yeah but they were meant to do an indepth analysis as part of their job (as in they got paid for it)... Which yeah you don't HAVE to play anything... but their research was extremely lacking too.

Is, uh, drakengard the best example to use here? It did not show so well in the lets play I read along to.

In all fairness, the letsplay kind of frames it in a certain way. The best description of the game was: "Drakengard is a game that is greater than its faults"

I still remember when someone was linking a part where Caim kicked some beggar and was like "Look stupid part of the game!" and I was like "No, that is entirely appropriate for Caim, it is kind of a character arc"

---

But mind you the fact that most people judge games by the first hour or few... has made a LOT of developers seriously front load their games (Back loading them if they are a MMORPG).

Ever wonder why you get a super powered team member really early in the game? A power preview? It certainly isn't for dramatic effect.
