It is, yeah. I mean, there's some fun parts, but also a lot of weirdness, and plenty of aggravation for anyone who has the faintest grasp of Norse mythology.

I liked Korg, but that might just be because the movie was already so silly that his comic relief-type character wasn't jarring. I actually thought he was voiced by the manager from Flight of the Concords, but apparently I just can't tell one kiwi from another. Durr.

And I've even watched Boy, so I really don't have an excuse.

Yeah, it's Waititi Marvel, but it's still Marvel. Can't get around that. Films are made by companies, etc etc.

To be honest, this bit is mostly on the people who wrote the comics the movies are based on.

But like was said, you don't watch Marvel Cinematic Universe movies because you want to see a masterpiece. You watch them for some fun, expensive special effects, and the obligatory Stan Lee cameo.

To be honest going to a Thor movie and being upset at the lack of accurate mythology would be like going to an iron man movie and being upset that the science and physics isn't completely accurate or a captain american movie and being upset it's not a totally accurate war documentary. It's kinda one of the central conceits you have to accept to even start watching.

My thoughts on Thor Ragnarok were that it was probably the best Thor movie, incredibly low bar that that is, that was also all I was expecting of it, so I liked it.

One thing is going to a Thor movie (high-tech alien angle can be done cleverly, so I'll allow the concept) and getting handed names assigned to roles and interpersonal relations that have nothing to do with their namesakes...

...But then there's Black Panther over here with sub-Saharan tribals worshiping "Bast, the panther god" (okay, fine, Egypt had a lot of influence, and it's not like myths haven't "rubbed off" before), and then the big savage warrior dude from the big savage warrior-based gorilla tribe comes along and says "glory to Hanuman!".

Just... no. On many levels.

Hanuman is an ape-god in Conan, and Conan is an official part of the Marvel universe.

...does that make Cthulhu part of Marvel too, then? Lovecraft and Robert Howard were apparently fans of each others' writing and sort of "merged" their mythos.

I watched Logan for the first time last night and while it was Marvel (Sony Marvel) it was a lot more depressing than a standard popcorn superhero movie

It was. It is also an excellent movie, partly because of that.

It definitely had a pretty down mood. Was a decent watch though

Here's the most blatant current connection, but yeah man all of that is a thing. The Hyborean Age is essentially Marvel's prehistory. You may also recall this character being in various Marvel Vs Capcom series.

Spoiler: Some notable excerpts (click to show/hide)

When he shows up in Modern Marvel it's usually one of those "Couldn't manifest his true form/full power in our reality" kind of thing and then they have to stop him before he does. Good standard lovecraftian stuff, except Spider-Man is there too.
