Lol, you guys are defending "gay friend"* of Republican Party/alt-right. Milo's an asshole, and I'm not gonna shed a single tear towards him being threatened.

* Don't you find it funny when the right-wing does idpol, no one ever calls them out on that, but when someone who's not a right-winger puts black people in... whatever type of media, everyone screams "FORCED DIVERSITY, VIRTUE SIGNALING, ERASING HISTORY!" Ironic af.

Just out of curiosity, what British tradiion would you preserve? There are many.
Right you are! A problem if the aim were to preserve the tradition.

Think of the English language. How would you preserve it? The Ulsterman does not speak like the Scot or the Welshman, nor does the American speak like any of the others. And that's not even getting into town-by-town variants. Many have tried, mostly in the past, to preserve their ideal version of English. This was of course not a success. Language is living, it changes and it varies. Yet for all that the English language is still distinct and separate from other languages.

So too with tradition in general. There are many versions, many strains, but they remain distinct and informed by shared history. The aim is not to preserve any one over others; rather, it is to ensure the tradition remains alive and relevant.

I think he means the IRA.  That's a tried and true British tradition.
Dude... I'm pretty sure that's a touchy subject for poor Dwarfy.
Might be a good idea to start paying one of the neighbourhood children to start your car in the mornings for a while. >.>
You know, I can't remember whether my mum was pregnant with me or one of my siblings when the IRA tried to kill her....

Either way, yes. The IRA are a touchy subject.

Yeah, I was totally "defending" the guy by saying he was awful, a polito-troll and a harasser of people; and a paedophile

Apparently most people here, even the ones I consider my friends are socialists and or middle to far left... not that it changes my opinion of them, but it is a tad uncomfortable. Still I have more in common with most people here than in any other place.

Yeah, here we have rules against stuff like wishing death on people. I guess once these people are outside Bay12 itself they revert back to savagery. I feel like playing a guessing game as to which banned members you're referring to, but we've probably been discussing banned people more than we're supposed to already. >.>
That sort of hostility in the corner of the internet you go to chill isn't pleasant.

That said, Mr. Yannowatipoplasquat is thoroughly gross and I'm not about to defend or pretend to like him just because of his admirable ability to trigger the left.

Edit: aaah ninjas!
@Hans: I have only watched that movie whilst sober... in fact I have only seen it once. I'm probably due for a rewatch myself!
In fact, most of the old kung fu flicks it pays homage to (that I love) would probably make for excellent cooked viewing...

There's a difference between defending someone, and saying to be accurate with criticism. I'll defend not misquoting or misrepresenting people, even if I dislike the person.

You're talking about Milo Yiannopoulos. I don't think he's actually a pedo or anything.
Quote
clips of videos-with-audio in which he talked about his own past as a teenager who had sex with men and suggested that some young teen boys might be old enough to give consent to such sexual relationships.
He was talking about gay teens who have sex with older men, but the specific context was that he was talking about himself as a teenager. People found that squicky basically, but saying that the context is that he is a pedo is a slight stretch.
Him speaking from personal experience makes it more harmful, not less, since it gives it an appearance of credibility.  He insisted that 13-year-olds can give meaningful consent (both for hetero and homo relationships) with himself as an example.

It's not his fault for having thoughts like that, or even wanting to talk about them with people.  It's important to be able to talk about such things.  But he presented that thought as truth to his fanbase, and the watchers of a very popular podcast (Drunken Peasants) and stood by it for the entire interview.  That's directly harmful to his young fans and validated a false gay stereotype in the minds of many people.

He later pretended it was "gallows humor" and attacked people for calling it out, shaming them for attacking an abuse victim.  Having demonstrated his thin skin, he continued with his profession of offending people for attention, eventually getting banned from Twitter for spamming an actress with racial slurs.

The guy needs help, but it's really harmful for him to have a platform.  Fortunately people seem to have generally realized that - except for that particular kind of conservative who wants "a gay friend" to justify their homophobia.

I eventually had a falling out with the same irc after we had a fight over me wanting them to stop overtly wishing death and beatups on polito-trolls (the person in question was that gay conservative with I think a greek- or Italian-sounding name, can't remember what it was exactly, who used to go around campuses harassing trans people (the one who was very quickly dropped by the media when it turned out he was a paedophile or something)
Complete pacifism in the face of murderous armed mobs is foolish, but Antifa still has 0 kills.  People like Alex Jones are getting people killed with their words, and the system isn't holding them responsible.  Murder obviously isn't the answer (which is why the left isn't using it, despite the crocodile tears), but *all* laws are enforced by violence, and what they're doing should be illegal.  Usually it IS illegal, but nobody's enforcing it.

Don't you find it funny when the right-wing does idpol, no one ever calls them out on that

What are we calling right-wing idpol? Isn't that white supremacist stuff? Seems like people are always calling that out.

but when someone who's not a right-winger puts black people in... whatever type of media, everyone screams "FORCED DIVERSITY, VIRTUE SIGNALING, ERASING HISTORY!" Ironic af.

Well that tends to only happen with an established franchise or character if they replace them with another group.

But ... sometimes it happens, and nobody really responds, so someone attached to the franchise comes out and makes a dig at some straw-man who is supposed to exist and can't handle whatever they've done. In Terminator: Dark Fate, nobody really gave two shits that there were women in it. Terminator 2 was well known for having a strong female lead already. So the director Tim Miller had to stir things up by saying that the male fans would be scared of the "strong woman" character, Grace. Which is ludicrous. We already have Sarah Connor (plus Aliens / Sigourney Weaver is big with the same core demographic). So who are the supposed fans who were going to flip out because there's a gun-toting woman in the movie, exactly? Basically, having female leads wasn't getting any sort of gut reaction so the guy had to tweet out some divisive jeers at the male half of the audience in order to drum up controversy.

Notably, it didn't happen with Wonder Woman, but Gal Gadot didn't make any divisive comments. But it did happen with Captain Marvel, though the ire only came after Brie Larson stated she didn't want to see so many white men hanging about. Nobody is reacting like that to the idea of a Black Widow / Scarlett Johansson movie, nor did they react like that to Wonder Woman. It really is just the fact that Brie Larson was an insufferable prat about the whole thing and alienated people.

Tim Miller's comments about Terminator fans supposedly not being able to handle a tough lady were probably intended to drum up the same sort of media attention as Brie Larson, but people have got to the point of just eye rolling now.

I didn't say to censor him or anything, just that his platform is extremely harmful.  Which it was.  A bit less so now that he's violated a bunch of terms of service - or as he'd put it, "been censored".

Where did anyone say anything about "complete pacifism"?

Yeah, much easier to just make up what people say themselves instead of reading what they say, isn't it

Your second point, which was related to nothing at all that anyone was talking about, and is completely wrong in either case since identity politics is fairly universally thought of as having been started by the right?
