I just realized that in my mental image of the Empire 88 from Worm, all of their Capes (except Alabaster) are black. They're a neo-Nazi white supremacist gang, so that's quite weird.

Have you never seen the SS or played wolfenstein? Or seen the shitty new star wars films? Black is a color that is quite often associated with Nazis. There's nothing weird about your mental image of Nazi Expies also wearing black.

I always saw Nazis as more grey, like the eastern front, or desert khaki like the Egyptian campaign. Black always seemed to me to be the colour of paramilitaries, who are not quite soldiers but are clearly not police either, but exist in their own realm of state-sanctioned violence bound by no accountability or even any organization structure. Sorta like how the sith in Star Wars do not exist inside of the imperial organization structure, but just float around above it, their authority only accepted after violently force choking the nearest imperial officer. Obviously some overlap with nazi paramilitaries, so I guess I don't disagree fully with you either - it's just black is not a very practical colour for wartime. It is however a good colour for intimidating civilian and even military persons
