I am somewhat concerned by the fact that 2 forumers have inhaled tear gas. That's 2 more than I would have expected to pop up on a thread within a day of each other, which possibly suggests that a relatively large amount of forumers have been exposed to tear gas at some point (though obviously I'm extrapolating from a really tiny sample size.)

Exposure to tear gas is a common feature in military and first-responder training. This is because it has little long-term effect, but can act as a proxy for many other less benign irritants that such a person might expect to face. For example, a firefighter that cannot deal with the tear gas probably is going to have a hard time dealing with smoke if they have an equipment failure in a burning building.

My family has a summer house near a military area. I've been exposed to tear gas as part of their training

Army training for me too. Take a run through the forest in a meter of snow, then show up to the funtime tent to see if you can wear a gas mask properly and then take it off to see how you like spicy wind.

I wasn't even supposed to be there that day (because of, y'know, the pneumonia), but nobody told me that. So when I showed up to the tent, my platoon leader was standing there, looked at me, and then told me off for having followed orders and shown up. But since I was already there, I might as well join in on the pleasantries. They even lit up a fresh pill just before it was my turn to taste the painbow.

My tear gas experience comes mainly from the protests I  participated against the gummit. Or even we I weren't, like the day one tear gas can landed on our 70 something neighbour while she was praying. It was a definitely not boring day.
