It also seems that Picard/Storm is something approaching canon. I can dig it.

Was. Disney doesn't like fun they can't control, so they removed it all from canon.

Also, reminds me of early Star Trek's misstep with the wording of their mission. It was originally "to go where no man has gone before", with the meaning that no human had been there before. It was misunderstood, so instead of clarifying, they changed it to "to go where nobody has gone before." It does sound nicer, but when it's all stories about traveling to inhabited planets, it comes off a lot imperialist ("where nobody we care about has gone before, because they're different and therefore wrong."). "To go where no human has gone before" doesn't roll off the tongue so well, and discounts the non-humans on the ship. Dropping it entirely, or just to say they're exploring and cataloging would work better, but loses the poetry. Not sure what the best solution is, but it's certainly got a lot of options.

You may overthinking it. OS was "no man has gone before" and TNG was "no one has gone before". The change was purely to remove the gender connotations, nothing deeper. I don't think it was misunderstood at all, but people rightly pointed out that the term inherently has gender in it, so it's less problematic to change it. Also, if you have a situation where "man" is the stand-in for all humans adventuring, and the people doing the adventuring are almost 100% men, then many people would challenge the idea that anything has been "misunderstood" in that way.

Also, I don't believe that the rewording really inadvertently added any colonialist connotations into the thing. Those were already inherent in the entire premise itself, which heavily smacks of Age of Exploration adventures and meeting the backwards natives.

If you go "where no one has gone before" to "seek other civilizations" then clearly you're indicating that people from that other civilization have been them before, just people from your own civilization haven't been there. If you live on one side of a desert and ask what's past the desert and someone says they don't know as no one has gone there before, the "no one" statement is clearly limited in scope to mean nobody who you know, rather than a literal and universal "no one".

So I took the  'dnd class test' over in the psyche thread.

and I noticed a few people commenting on their 'stats'.  Namely what was and wasnt good.

DnD 'average' for a human is still 8, right?  Specifically 6-9 as covering most of humanity?  So when everyone rolls up a couple of 166-point characters they're essentially rolling olympians?

The median is 10 now. But since every human receives a +1 to all stats I guess the human average is 11 ;)

Most races get a +2 to 2 (out of 6) attributes. Attributes mainly only matter by even increments too.

Not actually. If you roll a single dice, the average is 3.5 : (1+6)/2. So 2 dice = 7, and 3 dice = 10.5.

Add +- 1.5 to that and you get the median range is 9-12. So no, most of humanity won't have all those low rolls. For example, if you rolled in the bottom half for each of 6 stats (10 or lower), the chance of that is 0.5^6 = 1/64 = 1.5%. So 98.5% of all people will have at least one stat of 11 or higher. To get all 8's or lower would be an order of magnitude less likely than this.

I'd comment on 166 point characters but that's actually impossible, 18 * 6 = 108. The chances of rolling all 18s however is 100 quadrillion to 1, but this is symmetric with rolling all 3's.

I was suggested a server (dual-socket LGA 2011, X79 chipset) motherboard on an online shopping app. The title was perfectly normal at first, but then it read, "Eating Chicken" all of a sudden. That's probably a translation error, but what was "Eating Chicken" even supposed to mean?

I decided to do some digging. If you look up "eating chicken motherboard" on Google, you just get listings for these dual-socket X79 and X99 motherboards, as well as a few for some "gaming motherboards". I'm guessing that one went 'gaming' => 'PUBG' => 'winner winner chicken dinner' => 'eating chicken', so I guess I see the connection there, as tenuous as it is. These X79 and X99 motherboards, though, are server motherboards, intended to take Xeon processors. You could game on them if you really wanted to, but that's not the intended use case.

With that in mind, what the hell are they trying to imply? Are they trying to imply that these things are for gaming, or is it a freak translation accident that also happens to relate to gaming stuff?

'gaming' => 'PUBG' => 'winner winner chicken dinner' => 'eating chicken'

EDIT: having looked into it, that's actually plausible.

search for "Eating Chicken" products on Amazon

https://www.amazon.co.uk/chicken-artifact-one-click-shooting-explosion/dp/B08B7SKSN5/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=Eating+Chicken&qid=1596377100&sr=8-2

"Spot eating chicken artifact tablet one-click burst of eating chicken handle fast shooting tablet game handle explosion"

They're mostly gun triggers for tablets, which kind of fits the idea that they're for winning at PUBG.
