Also most vermin - though I would reckon most aren't halal or kosher.

Bugs are a delicacy here - which means food-grade ones are expensive. Drives me nuts, because I would like to try cooking with bugs.

Eggs seems to be the most efficient protein source.

Makes sense really, it's literally their job to be an efficient source of nutrients for developing embryos.

I'm going to add this to my list of names for various breakfast cereals, previously only occupied by weirdos.

And also they seem to have the best relation of production per kg of feed.

Chicken feed is soy, though, right? May not be as efficient as we think.

Back in the days, farmers mixed the eggshells (and their own finger and toe nail clippings) back into the chicken feed for their chalk needs. Oyster shells don't seem a very efficient substitute.

It's what we've got!  I can confirm Wierd as if he needs it.  The chicken feed has a little corn-material, here and there, but it's mostly grit that looks like egg or cartilage.  But who am I to say that that isn't shellfish?

Edit:  I meant eggshell.  And I coulda sworn some of them bragged about containing shellfish, as if that's a good thing - maybe it is?  I don't know what chickens need!  I'm just feeding them!

...Isn't this something anybody who keeps chickens would do? Eggshells go in compost, chickens get to pick through compost, cycle of life and all.

Chickens don't eat compost. They only eat the insects and worms living in the compost, and maybe a leftover seed.
Farmers put the crushed eggshells straight into the food-mix.

I suppose oyster shells have a small extra benefit of containing more trace elements than eggshells.
