200%. Their objective is not to serve you exactly what you want. Their objective is to keep you scrolling and watching on their platform. Outrage keeps you scrolling. Smut keeps you scrolling. Blocking keeps you scrolling. Making 40% to 60% of the content you see something you're not interested in keeps you scrolling for the next thing you are interested in. And if you explicitly say you don't like something, maybe you'll like the exact opposite if it gets shown to you. All at the end of the day so they can say the platform is active based on user#s and time spent, and advertisers are getting their stuff seen so the ad dollars keep flowing.

I just saw something on this the other day. The metrics work out that the best way to keep people scrolling constantly is to keep the density of content they DO want to see below a certain threshold. Users are subconsciously chasing the dopamine release of a thing they like, but almost as important is the anticipation of that dopamine release. It's the exact same methodology casinos use. Most gambling addicts don't keep coming back for the win, that's not what compels them. It's the anticipation and excitement of the win that keeps them addicted. It's analogous to shopping addiction. Shopping addicts aren't addicted to actually acquiring things; most of the stuff they buy remains in boxes once it's delivered. It's the anticipation of acquisition they're addicted to, the pursuit and choice of buying things despite not actually needing or wanting them.

Social media has just adopted that same method to their platforms.

When I woke up this morning I was shaky and uncoordinated as fuck. Don't know what was going on, if my alarm had jolted me so much my brain dumped a bunch of adrenaline into me, I had low blood sugar, or if I was shaking off the remains of the paralysis your body has when you're sleeping.

It could also be dehydration, or any combination of the above. I wake up like that sometimes too.

Well, no not quite. Google isn't necessarily interested in engagement. Advertisers do pay Google to have their results land near the top of your search. And what Google chooses to show first below those who pay is subject to a lot of factors, like how the websites themselves present their information. And Google does pay attention to what websites get the most traffic as it relates to search terms. But is that a consequence of more people choosing that site, Google promoting that site driving more users to it, or both? It's all very opaque. But if your question is: is Google trying to manipulate what I pay attention to the same way Facebook and others do? I'd say yes but to a lesser and less overt extent than Social Media in general. They're different vehicles for information. You go to Google to ask questions and find things out. You go to Facebook to get fed a stream of content it thinks you should consume.

That being said, I was researching a United States legal concept, and Google pointed me to the official position of the Chinese Government.
Much to my embarrassment, I almost cited it here.  ::)

If you're still using Google Search (or really any Google service at all) in A.D. MMXXIV, it was probably already over for you before it started.

I don't think ads really pay attention to anything you watch because I got a bunch of Japanese ads for convenient stores and stuff despite never watching anything in Japanese or about Japan.

I still get ads in Spanish from when I watched the Spanish broadcast of the World Cup a few years ago.

I use Google docs for writing. :'(

I'm in Russia but very Westernized so I get a mix of Russian and English-language ads.

It's ok, Google can be fine if you know what you are doing. Which you clearly do.

Look on the bright side: maybe Google's dataminers will enjoy your writing.

I'll admit that there's a much greater temptation to use Yandex, despite my trust in them being no greater than my trust in Google. At least their reverse image search actually kind of works.

They'd have scraped it from Royal Road anyways or something. Not that I care or that it affects me.
