There are a lot of thing about writing that I discovered.

George Orwell hated most of his books... and not in the typical "No writer likes his own works" sort of way either. He never intended the book to be as serious as people took the book.

People rewriting Shakespeare was not only common, happened within his lifetime, but also even scholars have hated his plays (Heck I dislike two of them and find his poetry kind of lousy... no offense).. and some of these rewrites are... Not bad actually... Some might even be better than the plays themselves.

---

As for Fanfiction being self-insert...

Well in a manner of speaking all fiction is self-insert.

if you mean "twilight sparkle pregnant" than yeah that's a thing that it suggests to you regardless of previous affiliation

EDIT: I tested this by trying it myself and seeing that then telling my former brony brother to try it and he got the same result

why do people always seem to assume that any fanfiction protag is a self-insert
It's the rule, not the exception

I dunno, it's down to a few things for me. I feel like a Mary sue character sometimes presupposes a level of intelligence the author might not possess, resulting in a weak storyline. (Specifically happened recently. Mary Sue used their superhuman perceptiveness and wits to root out the killer I'd already discovered half a book ago)

But if an author goes "what would I do in X situation" with their self-insert, you can get some really genuine emotions out of the character, preventing wooden protagonists, or worse, Ham.

But I think most fictional protagonists are "what if I X. What type of person would I be"

The biggest argument against Mary Sue is that one of the oldest characters in modern fiction, who is still actively evolving and incredibly popular to this day would be instantly called a Mary Sue, if it appeared in modern fanfiction.

Guess the name of that character. Hint: it starts with "S".

Yeah, I hate Sam too. Tolkien did a really shoddy job there, imo :P

The heck even, I shouldn't be surprised, yet I am. The Westboro Baptist church plans on picketing the funerals of the two women slain in the Louisiana theatre shooting.... O.o

CNN said that they said that it was punishment for gods disobedience, so, is Westboro saying that they died for Adam and Eves sins? I don't even.......

What I'm truly surprised at is that they haven't pissed off 'the wrong people' already and gotten something violent happen to them. Not that I truly wish death on anybody.

Arthur Conan Doyle made a perfectly well-balanced character, in my opinion.

What else would you expect? The show has run more or less the full gamut of meaningful topics available to it, so the only thing left for the fandom is a self-perpetuating torrent of pastel horse porn.
