Well I was trying to guess greatorder's thought when my mind wandered to 'maybe the aliens are allergic to water and die horribly making the most anti-climactic first contact ever'.  But then I remembered there was a movie like that.

But, given the fact that our planet has water on the surface which is visible from space, why would the aliens land here at all? Why not go, "You know, fuck that place. Let's settle on Io. There are volcanoes and earthquakes, but at least there's no water."

Water in the atmosphere too, not a lot, but probably enough to be distinctly lethal to anything that melts wicked witch style on contact with a small glass of water.  And they don't even wear protection!
