Rap can be good
You wash your mouth out with soap! :-X

"i have never made an effort to find an example of something that i like in a large style of media so i have made an ill-formed opinion about it and will force it on others"

like, I don't listen to rap at all, but i definitely know of more than five rap songs that i will most definitely listen to and enjoy, none of which i know the names of (though I think I could scrounge one up by google-fu)

Really, I say I don't like rap, but mostly I don't like the SUBJECT MATTER of rap.
The stuff that's rap but isn't all gangs and drugs and killificating is pretty good, at leaast judging by the HS album that may or may not be proper rap.

I can't speak for rap music, most of the stuff I regularly hear ambiently is either shit or meh, but I must admit to being rather partial to rap battles, ERB in particular.

Is it more condescending to directly argue with someone, or to tell them what they should think with no explanation?

Well, acceptance of your ignorance is the first step to enlightenment.  :P

Not that I'm rolling with a phat librizzle of beats, but there is good hip-hop.

Outkast, Mos Def, Mackelmore, even Eminem when he's not trying to just be the rap equivalent of Marilyn Manson.

And Chinese rap can be epic. Especially given the homophonic nature of Mandarin, there are some truly inspired lyrical masterpieces.

"Do the impossible, see the invisible" :P
And other less silly examples.  It's more impressive and pure as improv, though :P

There's even good country music, without even counting proto-rock stuff.  I sing Country Roads at least once whenever I'm on a long drive home...

Heck, I consider it a personal failing that my music collection isn't even more diverse.  Having preferences is fine, but I'm sure there are a lot of gems I haven't found yet because of their genre!

Yeah, right. Condescend at me! It's not like I have any idea what I'm talking about. ::)

Oh dear, this is more serious than I thought ):
Rap music is essentially telling stories lyrically, to a certain type of beat.  There's nothing wrong with the beat, and I *love* rock which tells stories (Phish, Grateful Dead, Nightwish...)

There are some stories I think are cheap pandering shit, like "I have a billion dollars and fuck bitches" or "I killed a dozen people I'm so badass".  That's a lot of gangster rap.  But a lot of rap tackles issues in a realistic way and confronts people with them.  And other rap is just fun.

Really, I say I don't like rap, but mostly I don't like the SUBJECT MATTER of rap.

that is not rap

that is gangsta rap

rap is a style of presenting lyrics

gangsta rap is a genre of music

conflating the two is like saying that you hate guitars because you don't like country

also Kanye's never done gangsta rap

and I know that people automatically hatejerk over kanye west but dude's friggin monstrously good at writing and playing music holy crap

I kind of wish there was some sort of Random Anything Radio.
Where all the music was selected, completely at random.  With filters to prevent, you know, NC-17 pieces and all.  That would be kinda cool.
Oh and they have to broadcast the NAME of the song they just played.  And artist.
Seriously is there a station like that?

it sounds hilariously expensive for licensing purposes

it'd be best to use one of those music streaming sites

Started from the Bottom freestyle by PromiseNyc
One Mic freestyle by PromiseNyc

Dumping some rap I like. I hate the gangsta rap scene and everything, but there's good music bruh. PromiseNyc is particularly worth checking out, he's this underground dude with real down to earth subject matter, no gangsta stuff.

I've contemplated coding some kind of bot or something to do that. Just stream randomly selected music. An alternative is a twitterbot that links to random music youtube videos every set length of time.

Biggest problem with that is where to keep the data and how to manage the data for what music is streamed. A random collection of music free of genre bias and with enough content to avoid regular replays seems a hellaciously big hassle to manage and keep up to date.

Also licensing stuff. Didn't even think of that.
