PLEASE DO NOT QUOTE.

Out of the blue, recruiter who fell off the map, comes and says I have a phone interview tomorrow, with of all things a large firm.

They're worried I've been out on my own too long, and have no large firm experience. Not much I can do with that really. Let's see what they do. They call this a "lateral hire." (sigh).

I'm not even going to touch all the craziness I went through or the corrupt jerks who went to jail after trying and failing to avoid that by retaliating against me for having some basic morality. It's odd, on a personal level, people understand and agree with me turning in corrupt officials (especially the ones who hurt kids). Professionally, god help you if you ever turn in anyone for any reason, no matter how justified, or how horrible the thing they did was.

(Shrugs)

I'm a little off by this. I don't know what to think.

In seriousness, it's a disgrace that people fighting corruption like yourself end up with the short end of the stick. Should be the other way around, but apparently muh profits is a convincing argument.

I get that I come across as odd for the no quoting thing. I've explained it repeatedly and really no thank you on a repeat. When you've been burn noticed for doing the right thing, yeah....

Anyhow. Thank you for the serious part. It's kinda nuts, and I appreciate the sentiment.

Muh profits is a VERY convincing argument when the people making the decision are on the receiving end of some most of the profits.
That's how revolutions happen

Thank you. I do appreciate it.

I kinda get the feeling that this recruiter is trying to place a square peg in a round hole with me and this position but yeah. We'll have to see and I hope it works out.

Well it's perhaps not a good idea to dismiss a job (or prospect of one, anyway) out of hand. Have you been told much about it as of yet?

I do what I can.

I really hope it does work out for you.  You're good people.  That is too often a hindrance...

But yeah, what hector said.

Yea just cuz it's a large firm I wouldn't dismiss it out of hand.  I've worked with some medium size businesses as one off tech support, and while I doubt I had the whole picture I saw a lot of things that are not exactly customer facing.

A good number of those businesses really did seem to be trying to do the right thing when possible.   I've even overheard a doctor talking about doing some pro bono work on someone who could not pay (I don't know the details as I was not intentionally listening in, but it was an oncology office, so I assume it was bad.).  And as far as I knew that doctor was the one who actually owned the office, since she was the one who was paying us.

Now I'm sure I don't have as much experience with law offices as you do, but who knows, you may be pleasantly surprised.

---my own wtf----

Went to the dentist's office for the first time in 10 years after the same amount of time with sketchy tooth care.  Was not nearly as bad as I expected.  A few cavities and some old fillings that need replaced, 2 impacted wisdom teeth and one oddball tooth that needs a specialist to look at(but is probably going to be another extraction since that tooth is what caused my visit in the first place).   I also have gingivitis, but it apparently isn't too bad.  Supposedly easily reversible.

My WTF is that I was expecting to go to the dentist and immediately start getting fitted for dentures.  Since my teeth look terrible and misshapen and I have a mile long overbite.  I'm told that is pretty much all just cosmetic and does no actual harm.  Says it's possible that after the 2 impacted wisdom teeth get extracted some of the teeth may even realign since the crowding would be reduced.  I am amazed at how messed up teeth can apperantly look and still be easily corrected.

Dude, you should have seen my face before I went to the orthodontist.

Not only did I have a huge overbite, my front teeth were sticking almost straight out of my face. The crowding was so bad they actually had to expand my palate just to get everything to fit.

Internet arguments are silly.

There is this odd "Guilt by association" concept that I've stumbled onto now.

Basically if SOMEONE out there uses a phrase or term incorrectly or for a unjust agenda... it basically infects all other uses of that term.

Honestly I don't go to tumblr... why is tumblr infecting other places? Seriously can we keep tumblr in tumblr?

I think they might be trying to lowball me on pay / have me put in a ton of work for that. [sigh]. O well.

You guys pay your starting associates $100K (I know it sounds like a lot, but trust me after your expenses, debt, and the fact that you might end up working 80 to 100 hours a week with no life and health problems from it, no). You also want them to have 2000 in billable hours (and there are far too many unbillable hours) a year? [sigh]

You'd be better off never having gone to law school and working two jobs for $20 an hour. You'd be working less hours, making more, and having more job security, without the debt, or years of your life earning next to nothing. O, and people won't hate you for being a lawyer.

This deal is sounding shittier all the time. Never be a lawyer kids.

What do people mean when they say "pls don't quote"? Why wouldn't you want a quote? Because you might change it, and don't want the old version still around in people's posts?
