The amount of money they're making. Never underestimate the demand for high quality anime porn I guess :V

It also has to do with high quality art.

A really good artist who can draw consistently well and often is worth their weight in gold.

Commissions, not even patreon, go as high as 100+ USD...
That certainly is some high-quality art.
Yeah, and actually I recognized some of the art from a "genderswapped Disney characters" thing from a while back.  I thought that was cool.

Oh I know that, and I recognize that they are extremely good at what they do. It's just kinda funny how there's loads of other folks with a similar or even better skillset who are doing comissions for a couple hundred dollars (IIRC MTG cards are about 100 bucks a piece) instead of raking in tens of thousands simply by changing their subject matter to something more, let's say mass appealing. There's also folks who are objectively bad at this stuff but since they're doing this subject matter it also means they're earning cash from it, like, not huge amounts, but certainly way more than their skill level would otherwise allow.

How often would they be doing commissions though in comparison to once or twice a month in that patreon?

I think you're underestimating non-porn artist incomes. Last year a MtG artist said they make $1000 per piece, and he was complaining about how low that was. There was a controversy over artist compensation after that, so they might get more now. Non-porn work has other advantages too - for example, it's much easier to sell physical objects with your art on it because they can be displayed publicly. One of the big things WotC did for artists recently was allow them to profit off making playmats of their art for MtG players to buy.

Do you have any links for that penguin? I'm kinda in this whole thing myself and I don't remember seeing that happen at all. Might've missed it tbh but something like that would've made some bang on the social networks and I'm following most of the big industry folk there.

Also the number of commissions is irrelevant, it's how much you'd be earning for each, and looking at the patreon page, they do 6-8 pieces per term, that's atleast 2k dollars per piece. Now, there's other stuff they do for the money, like recording the process and all, but that doesn't take too much time away from painting itself since it happens mostly in parallel.

I might be on the way low end of the scale with pricing, but I don't think I'd ever be able to charge 2k+ for a single piece, maybe it's just different economic standards but if a piece takes say, five days to finish, that's 400+ bucks per day. You could live almost comfortably with a monthly pay of that amount in these parts.

The artist is Peter Mohrbacher. Here's the comment where he said they got paid $1000, and that's on a link to his blog where he complains about how MtG artists were treated. It's at least a little outdated since he hasn't worked for Wizards in over a year, and they've definitely made changes in response to his criticisms. I'm not sure how big a controversy it was, but Reddit was mad about it for a while.

On his Patreon he makes $3600 a month. He made 31 pieces last year, averaging out to just under $1400 per art if he keeps up that rate. This is before he sells any prints or merchandise (which he has more opportunities to do than a NSFW artist). This is less than the porn Patreon, yes, but I think that has more to do with Mohrbacher producing trippy theological art while Sakimi Chan does fanart of Disney movies. Porn or not, your profits will be affected by how niche your subject matter is.

Also, remember that Patreon is less consistent than that "$X per month" wants you to think. We could just be looking at the highest point in a popularity spike. While unlikely, it's possible that all that money could disappear before they get it at the end of the month.

Oh I remember his blog post now, yeah. Tho I can't quite recall where I got my figure, I think it was a podcast of some sort, also probably outdated at this point.

And I agree with your second point, but I still think that doing porny stuff has a lower entry bar for viable payouts. Sakimichan does have a wide audience because of the subject matter, but I don't think the amount of money would be the same if it were just regular old fanart, since there's a bunch of that already by various people and I don't think they make anything near those numbers.

Either way, I don't really have a problem with folks earning cash doing what they love (hell, I want in on that too), but the numbers there kinda suprised me.

If MS is collecting private data without permission they'll be at the receiving end of a lawsuit fairly soon.

Well nobody reads the EULA, so maybe they are doing it with permission, heh.
If you don't want to read EULAs then can I suggest the EULAlyzer I haven't used it myself but I've seen it recommended before.

I wonder, does the EULA of Windows 10 even apply if it installs without your knowledge/consent or even against user wishes? I'm pretty sure in the US a contract(which a EULA is a form of) is not legally binding unless both parties consciously agree to it(with the user doing so by clicking on the "I Agree" button). Otherwise, it'd be something like drawing a picture and charging people $100 to look at it regardless of quality(my drawing sucks, okay?), then shoving it into your face, then demanding $100 which you are contractually obligated to pay due to the agreement(which is written on the artwork and thus requiring seeing the artwork to read) which is implicitly agreed to by the act of seeing the picture as written in the agreement.

The amount of money they're making. Never underestimate the demand for high quality anime porn I guess :V

Speaking of art... tempted to right-click->Save image as... some of those. And I'm not necessarily talking about the porny stuff.

You have to remember - it's not just the time et al, it's also the skill. Considering the amount of time that someone devoted to getting to that spot, the high price on commissions does add up. Plus it's a lot of effort often to get yourself out there, get well known, force yourself to do work (in some instances anyway) that makes you recognizable, etc etc.

I will say doing porny stuff has an awesome bar for payouts, lmao. The more unusual you're willing to go, the higher - but at the same time you're setting yourself a reputation there. I will say I see a lot of artists way, way underpricing though; if you're giving me $25 for a piece of art, it better damn well be a sketch. I don't actively do commissions anymore because I'm working on other things, but yeah - I've seen multi-hundreds pretty often. The furry community actually tends to be more willing to pay good prices, and oddly not even "all" or even "mostly" porn, lol.

At the same time ... For some reason a lot of people want to think digital art should cost less, which really irks me, particularly since it also comes with the expectation of more fully controlled art.

That is, in highschool I sold a random painting for $75 to a teacher; she had no control over what it was, she just saw it and went "I want that" and paid the (what I considered outrageous) price I'd put on it at the art show. It was an impressionist, silhouetted landscape, which tbh was like 60% black and near-black paint - but she loved it. For most average commissioners (like, for example, on dA) if I charged $75 I better be giving a full custom illustration! And background! And action! etc etc ... of course that may also be the difference in older, wealthier commissioners and kids who want art of OCs.

And then you get into the adoptables scene and I completely forget where this rant was going because I remember that people pay several hundred dollars for relatively simple but popular 'adopts' and I just throw my chair out the window.

We didn't have much of a winter here in glorious Toledo, but now isn't really the time to make up for it. Snow is falling thick and heavy, some of which even seems to be sticking to the ground. This happened a couple days ago, and people tell me last night as well, but that was thin and anemic compared to what's coming down now.

Everytime I think of playing Space Engineers I go "Seems awesome!" and then I remember how long it takes to do anything, even when sped up, and back down.

Definitely one of the cooler games that I won't play.
